Before an inactive starter’s lineup lock, move an eligible player from your bench into the open active slot, then confirm the change saved. A benched player does not count toward your team total. The exact deadline depends on your fantasy platform and league settings, so check the displayed lock time rather than assuming every player locks at the first game of the week.
Replace the inactive player before their lineup locks
- Check the player’s status and kickoff. Confirm the player is officially inactive and note when their real-life game is scheduled to start.
- Open your team’s lineup or roster. Find the inactive starter in an active slot.
- Choose an eligible bench player. The replacement must fit the vacated position under your league’s roster rules. If no bench player qualifies for that slot, check whether an eligible player can go into an available flex position.
- Make and apply the swap. On Yahoo, the documented workflow is to use Swap Mode, select the position being replaced, and then select a highlighted eligible position. Other platforms may use different controls.
- Verify the active lineup and save status. Make sure the replacement appears in an active slot, not on the bench, and confirm the platform saved the change. Recheck before kickoff.
Choose among players already on your roster by weighing their expected role and opportunity, current game status, matchup, kickoff time, and your league’s scoring. If you do not have a suitable bench option, adding a free agent is a separate roster transaction; waiver rules and add/drop deadlines may apply.
When does a fantasy lineup change lock?
There is no universal deadline. A player’s inactive report and your fantasy lineup lock are separate events: an inactive designation does not automatically mean you can still edit the lineup. Check your league settings and the platform’s displayed deadline, and act before the applicable lock.

An early Thursday, Saturday, or international game can lock a player sooner than you expect. Use that player’s own scheduled start time where your league permits player-by-player changes; do not assume the usual Sunday lineup deadline applies.

Can the platform automatically replace an inactive player?
NFL Fantasy offers an optional setting called Auto-Swap Inactives; it is not a universal feature across fantasy services. NFL Support says teams designate players inactive “about 90 minutes” before a scheduled game. The feature swaps a starter projected for zero points and starts the top-ranked player on the manager’s Backups list. NFL Support describes it this way: “Auto-Swap is a setting you can activate to automatically swap out an injured starter for someone on your bench.” See NFL Fantasy’s Auto-Swap Inactives instructions.
If you use it, set and rank your backups before games begin. Keep monitoring late news and lock times: the documented feature has a zero-projection condition and does not remove the need to manage your lineup.

What if the player is already locked?
Once a player or roster has locked, whether you can make a correction depends on the platform and your league’s rules. Check the platform’s available lineup controls and league settings. Do not assume a commissioner can override the lock or that a post-kickoff change will be allowed.
