What Happens When an NHL Team Starts Its Backup Goalie?

An NHL backup start may reflect workload, a back-to-back, health, form, or readiness. It does not automatically mean the starter has lost the job or predict the result.

The backup goalie takes the crease for that game, while the usual starter gets the night off. Coaches may make that choice to manage workload, split a back-to-back, respond to health or form, or keep both goalies ready. A backup start alone does not mean the starter has lost the job, and it does not predict whether the team will win.

Why does a team start its backup?

There is no universal rotation rule. Coaches weigh the schedule and situation rather than following a single workload formula. NHL goalie coach David Marcoux has named standings, travel, back-to-back games, prior and expected workload, injuries, the starter’s physical and mental state, and the backup’s need to keep rhythm as factors in planning. His overview is available in NHL.com’s goalie workload commentary.

  • Schedule and travel: On consecutive nights, a coach may rest the starter in either game. The opponent, travel, and time since the starter’s last appearance can influence which one.
  • Workload: A starter coming off a heavy run may get a planned break, particularly when the team has a credible second option.
  • Health and performance: An injury concern or recent form can change the plan. A start is not, by itself, evidence of a demotion.
  • Team situation: Standings pressure and the particular game’s importance can affect whether a coach uses the starter or gives the backup an opportunity.
  • Readiness: Teams also need the backup to stay prepared in case the starter becomes unavailable.

For any particular game, the coach’s actual reason cannot be inferred from the lineup alone. A team announcement or coach comments, along with injury and schedule context, are needed to establish the motive.

What changes during the game?

The backup faces the opponent’s shots and plays unless the team makes a goalie change or an injury forces one. The starter is available to enter if needed. The backup’s performance contributes to the result, but so do the defense, the opponent, and the team’s scoring; a backup start does not establish that the team is more likely to lose.

How do teams keep a backup ready?

Long gaps between appearances can make timing and game feel difficult to maintain. Winnipeg goalie Eric Comrie described the challenge to NHL.com this way: “The hardest part is definitely finding that game rhythm.” Coaches may support readiness through video discussion, goalie-coach work, and practice drills designed to feel like game situations. NHL.com discusses those challenges and approaches in its report on life as an NHL backup.

In that 2025 report, NHL.com said waits between starts had shrunk over the preceding 10 seasons as more teams moved toward tandems and shared workloads. It described the League’s top goalies as playing close to 60 games rather than 70; that is a reported trend, not a fixed limit or a rule that every team follows.

Does resting a starter improve playoff performance?

It has not been established as a guarantee. A 2024 retrospective cohort study of 51 goalies across 111 goalie-seasons found no statistically significant association between regular-season workload and postseason performance in its main models. Its primary goals-saved-above-average-per-60 regression explained 6.8% of variance and was not statistically significant (R²=.068, P=.26); models examining save percentage, quality starts, and goals against were also not significant. The study is available through PubMed Central.

The result does not prove rest never matters for an individual goalie. The study was observational, and counting starts does not capture how long a goalie played or how many shots they faced. It addresses workload and postseason performance across a cohort, not whether a specific backup start changes the outcome of one game.

What about back-to-back games and goalie tandems?

Teams often consider sharing starts, especially across consecutive nights, but the benefit should not be reduced to a precise expected number of goals. In a 2022 explainer, the Seattle Kraken recounted an early estimate that save percentage fell by just over 11% on the second night of a back-to-back. The same article noted that later analyses suggested the effect might be smaller. That figure is a historical estimate, not settled current consensus or a prediction for a particular goalie. See the Kraken’s goalie workload analysis.

Is an emergency backup the same as the team’s backup goalie?

No. The ordinary backup is the team’s second goalie and can be selected to start. An emergency backup goalie (EBUG) is a contingency role, not simply another name for that regular second goalie. NHL.com’s article for the 2026–27 season says teams are required to have an EBUG, subject to eligibility limits; the EBUG dresses, practices, and travels with the team. Because that detail concerns a specific season and league policy can change, consult the 2026–27 EBUG information for its current scope.
