Confirm that your starter is officially inactive, then start the available tight end with the clearest path to routes and targets—not simply the player labeled as the backup. Check your league’s scoring, roster options, transaction rules, and lineup-lock time before making the change; a replacement’s recent usage signals opportunity, not guaranteed points.
Confirm the starter is inactive and check the clock
Fantasy injury news can change close to kickoff. Check the NFL.com injury report for the relevant week, then confirm the status in your fantasy platform. Practice participation and game status are different kinds of information; do not treat a limited practice as confirmation that a player will miss the game.
Find your platform’s lineup-lock rule before making a move. A player may lock when that player’s game begins, so a later-playing replacement does not necessarily let you change a lineup spot after your starter’s game has started. NFL.com’s beginner guide advises setting a lineup at least five minutes before kickoff of the game in its example; check your league’s actual settings rather than assuming that timing applies everywhere. See NFL.com’s fantasy football beginner guide and your platform’s rules.
Choose by opportunity, not by the backup label
The key question is whether a candidate is likely to be involved in the offense. Look for evidence that the tight end runs routes and earns targets, and consider whether the inactive starter’s role could shift to that player. A nominal second tight end may block more than he runs routes, or the team may spread the missing player’s work among several receivers. Do not assume the backup inherits the starter’s full workload.

- Routes: A player running routes has more chances to receive a pass than one kept in to block.
- Targets: Targets show that the quarterback has looked to the player, though past targets do not guarantee future volume.
- Role in scoring areas: Check current information for red-zone involvement when available; do not infer it from a player’s position or depth-chart label.
- Role change: Ask whether the starter’s absence plausibly creates extra work for this candidate or whether the offense is likely to redistribute it.
Compare your available tight ends in league context
When you have more than one option, compare what each player is likely to do and how your league scores it. Receptions matter more in leagues that award points per reception; yardage, touchdowns, and any bonuses also affect the choice. Then consider current projections, matchup, and team situation without treating any one of them as decisive.
| Factor | What to check | How it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Opportunity | Routes, targets, and whether the inactive player’s role may shift to the candidate | Helps distinguish a usable role from a depth-chart label alone |
| Scoring | Reception value, yardage, touchdowns, bonuses, and roster rules | Shows which kinds of production matter most in your league |
| Game context | Current matchup, team situation, and projections | Adds context, but does not make a result certain |
| Availability | Whether the player is rostered, how claims work, and whether you can open a roster spot | Determines whether you can actually make the move |
| Timing | The candidate’s kickoff and your platform’s lock rules | Helps prevent a move that is no longer allowed |
Use weekly examples as evidence, not standing recommendations
NFL Fantasy’s Week 2, 2026 tight-end advice offered Michael Mayer as a conditional start if Brock Bowers was inactive again. It reported that Mayer ran 23 routes—the second-most among Raiders players—and led the team with seven targets in Week 1. Those figures illustrate why actual usage can matter more than the backup label; they are specific to that report and week, not a universal threshold or a recommendation for another slate.

The same article cited 24.5 fantasy points allowed to Cardinals tight end Trey McBride in the Week 1 opener. That is one opponent result mentioned in weekly advice, not a reliable standalone forecast for another tight end. NFL Fantasy’s Week 1, 2026 advice also shows why reputation alone is not enough: streaming recommendations can respond to a player’s recent stretch and changing context. Treat weekly rankings and examples as time-bound, and check the current week’s role and news.
