First confirm the player’s current status, your league’s position rules and the platform’s lock deadline: on ESPN, slots lock individually at each NFL game’s kickoff, while NFL Fantasy’s 2025 rules set the deadline by the individual player’s scheduled start.
What to do when a player is ruled out
- Verify the status. Check the player’s designation in your fantasy platform and look for official inactive information. ESPN says it uses the NFL’s official injury and inactive list to update player status. A “questionable” tag is not the same as being officially inactive. ESPN’s player status definitions.
- Find the player’s game time and lineup deadline. A deadline may apply to that player’s game, not the start of the full Sunday slate. Check your league’s rules and the platform’s displayed lock time.
- Choose an eligible replacement. Check that the bench player can fill the open position under your league’s roster settings, including any flex eligibility.
- Make the swap in the lineup screen and confirm it saved. Make sure the replacement is shown in the active slot before the applicable deadline.
- If the slot is locked, contact the League Manager. Do not assume you can edit it yourself after kickoff; any exception should follow your league’s agreed rules.
When do fantasy football lineups lock?
ESPN: individual player slots lock at kickoff
ESPN Fan Support says, “Player slots lock individually as each NFL game kicks off.” That means an early-game player’s slot can lock while later-game players remain editable. After a player’s slot locks, ESPN says only the League Manager can change that player on the manager’s behalf. ESPN’s roster lock guidance, updated April 15, 2026.
NFL Fantasy: deadline is the player’s scheduled start
NFL Fantasy’s 2025 rules allow an owner to change a player’s active or reserve status before that player’s scheduled NFL start, as determined by NFL.com’s clock. This is a player-specific deadline, not necessarily a single deadline for the whole slate. NFL Fantasy’s active/reserve rules.
Other platforms and custom leagues
Lock settings can differ by platform and league configuration. The cited rules establish the procedures for ESPN and NFL Fantasy, not every fantasy service or custom league. Check your league’s settings rather than assuming that one platform’s timing applies everywhere.

How to choose a replacement
Use the player who fits the vacant roster slot under your league’s eligibility rules; there is no universal lineup configuration. NFL Fantasy’s standard lineup is one quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, one tight end, one running back/wide receiver flex, one team defense and one kicker, but leagues can use different setups. - Check whether your available player is eligible at the required position or flex slot.
- Use the platform’s player updates to confirm the replacement is expected to play.
- Make the change before the starter’s slot locks, then verify the active lineup reflects it.
What if the player’s slot has already locked?
On ESPN, you cannot swap a player yourself after that player’s slot locks. ESPN says only the League Manager can make a roster change on your behalf. Contact the manager promptly and follow the league’s established rules; the cited NFL Fantasy deadline likewise does not permit an owner to change active/reserve status after the player’s scheduled start. Using an ESPN IR slot
If your league has an IR slot enabled, ESPN says a player designated Out or Injured Reserve may qualify. Eligibility depends on the displayed status and league settings. Check the designation before moving the player, and review ESPN’s waiver guidance if a player in an IR/IL slot becomes healthy: the roster-slot limit can affect whether you can submit waiver claims.
