Treat that figure as a developer’s claim—not proof that a particular PC or game will run well. The current NawaOS download page describes version 2.1, with different stated requirements: 4 GB of RAM and 25 GB of disk space.
What NawaOS 1.0 included—and what its 2 GB claim means
In a December 2025 Linux Foundation forum post, developer Ahmed Abdulla described NawaOS as a Debian-based gaming distribution for limited hardware. He said version 1.0 included a customized Cinnamon desktop with Arc Dark styling and came with Steam (including Proton), Lutris, Wine, RetroArch, and OBS Studio. Abdulla described his aim as creating a “Game Ready” environment that was “lightning fast and accessible even on limited hardware.” Read the announcement.
The post said NawaOS could run modern and retro games on systems with as little as 2 GB of RAM. It did not identify a processor, graphics card, game, graphics settings, frame-rate target, or test method. That makes 2 GB a stated target, not an independently verified gaming minimum. It also does not establish that every included application runs smoothly at that memory capacity.
Do not confuse NawaOS 1.0 with the current release
NawaOS’s official page identifies version 2.1 as the latest release and dates it to September 2026. For that 64-bit release, the page lists a 3.4 GB ISO and minimum requirements of a 64-bit PC, 4 GB of RAM, and 25 GB of disk space. It also lists Steam, Lutris, RetroArch, and Proton, and describes a first-boot wizard. Those details apply to version 2.1; they do not verify the 1.0 announcement’s 2 GB claim or establish which later features were present in 1.0. Check NawaOS’s current release page before downloading, since requirements and instructions can change.

The page says to flash the ISO to a USB stick for a live session or installation, but does not specify a required USB capacity or speed. Check the page’s current instructions rather than assuming a particular USB specification.
Debian’s memory figures are installation guidance, not game requirements
Debian’s Trixie installation guide lists 1 GB of RAM as a minimum and 2 GB as recommended for installing with a desktop, alongside 10 GB of disk space. These figures describe installing Debian; they are not a promise that a game will fit in memory or perform acceptably. See Debian’s installation requirements.

Debian notes that older or lower-end systems can use a less resource-hungry graphical environment than GNOME or KDE Plasma, naming Xfce, IceWM, and Window Maker as examples. Its documentation also lists Xfce, LXQt, LXDE, MATE, Cinnamon, and KDE Plasma among desktop choices. A lighter desktop may reduce background resource use, but no published figure here measures an FPS gain for NawaOS or any game. NawaOS 1.0’s use of Cinnamon was not shown to be unusually low-memory.
Changing desktop environments cannot by itself resolve a game’s CPU or GPU demands, missing drivers, anti-cheat restrictions, or compatibility problems. Consider it one system-level option, not a substitute for checking the game and hardware.

Evaluate a low-resource PC before installing for gaming
- Inventory the PC and intended games. Record the CPU, graphics hardware, RAM, storage type, and available disk space. Make a list of the specific games you want to play; “low-resource” covers too many different configurations for a blanket recommendation.
- Separate OS installation from game suitability. Debian’s desktop memory figures describe installation, while NawaOS developer Ahmed Abdulla’s 2 GB statement was not accompanied by benchmark details. Neither tells you how a specific game will perform on your machine.
- Check every Steam game’s requirements and supported systems. Open its Steam Store page and scroll to the system requirements and compatible operating systems. Steam Support explains where to find them. Linux or Steam Play availability alone does not guarantee acceptable performance on a particular computer.
- Consider a lighter desktop only if overhead is a concern. Debian documents options such as Xfce, LXQt, LXDE, IceWM, and Window Maker. Treat any performance benefit as a possibility, not a measured result for NawaOS or a guaranteed FPS improvement.
- Use version-specific NawaOS instructions. If installing now, check the official page for the current release’s requirements and ISO instructions. Do not apply the version 2.1 specifications retroactively to NawaOS 1.0.
How to interpret the claims when choosing an OS
NawaOS 1.0 is relevant as a historical example of a Debian-based distribution packaged around gaming software for limited hardware. Its developer’s stated 2 GB target can prompt a test on an individual machine, but it cannot stand in for game-by-game compatibility checks or measured performance data. For a current installation, the official page’s version 2.1 requirements are the applicable published figures; for a gaming decision, the specific game’s requirements and the PC’s components matter more than Debian’s installation minimums.
