If the slot is still editable, compare the player with legal, active alternatives under your scoring rules; do not assume that a “ruled in” tag means a full workload or that an “out” tag guarantees a swap is possible.
Start with the lineup deadline, not the injury label
Fantasy platforms do not share one universal lineup deadline. Find out whether your league allows daily changes or locks a lineup for the week, then check the affected player’s specific lock. A change that is possible in one league or contest may be unavailable in another.
- Daily lineups: You may be able to set the roster again each night, subject to that league’s player locks.
- Weekly lineups: A player’s status change can affect a slot for the rest of the scoring period if the lineup has already locked.
- Player-specific locks: Some rules tie the deadline to each rostered player’s first scheduled game in the scoring period, rather than one deadline for the entire roster.
NBA.com’s 2026-27 beginner guide explains the daily-versus-weekly distinction. Check your active league’s settings for the rule that actually applies.
Use this quick decision process
- Confirm the latest status. Check a current report and the fantasy platform’s displayed designation close to the applicable deadline. Availability can change near tipoff.
- Check whether the slot is still editable. Look at the contest’s lock indicator and rules. If the player or contest has locked, do not assume you can make a change.
- Compare eligible alternatives. Confirm the replacement is eligible for that roster spot and has a game in the relevant scoring period. Weigh the player’s expected role and your scoring format against the alternative.
- Make the move only if it is legal and worthwhile. A “ruled in” designation does not guarantee a full workload. If the player is out, a replacement helps only if the slot remains open and the alternative can score under your league’s rules.
- Recheck before the deadline. If news is still developing, verify the status and lock again before the platform closes the slot.
Understand how locks and late swap work
Lock rules vary by platform and contest. DraftKings says players can edit before the first game starts. In a non-late-swap contest, the lineup cannot be edited after a game locks; in a late-swap contest, only players whose games have not started remain editable. DraftKings also says each athlete locks at the scheduled start of their team’s game. See its lineup-edit guidance and guidance on athletes who do not play or whose games are cancelled.

On DraftKings, an athlete tagged Out after the competition locks cannot be swapped. The platform says it may send status alerts when possible, but participants remain responsible for monitoring active status. An Out tag is therefore not proof that a legal replacement is still available.
Weekly lineup deadlines can be player-specific
CBS Sports’ 2026-2027 Free Fantasy Basketball rules say weekly lineups cannot be changed for that week once the period begins. The stated deadline for each rostered NBA player is five minutes before that player’s first scheduled game in the applicable weekly period. If a game is delayed or postponed, the player locks at its originally scheduled time.

- Fantasy Baseball Draft Board (48" X 36") - 80lb High Gloss Paper)
- Includes over 500 - 4" x 1" color coded Player Labels! (SP, RP, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF*)
- Player List updated as of 2/7/20
- Mini Marker & Tape included
This means the practical deadline may differ across players on the same roster. Check the player’s first scheduled game for that scoring period rather than relying on a single general idea of when “the week” locks.
Account for scoring rules that penalize benching
In NBA High Score, managers can edit daily, but benching a player erases the points that player has already earned that week. That makes a late decision different from an ordinary daily lineup: compare the replacement’s possible contribution with the banked points you would give up. NBA.com describes this rule in its 2026-27 beginner guide.

Know what automatic substitutions do—and do not do
NBA Fantasy Salary Cap Edition describes automatic substitutions when a starter plays less than one minute. A substitute must still satisfy the formation rules, and managers can set the priority order for bench choices. The feature is not a general promise that an unavailable starter will always be replaced by your preferred player; check the game’s Salary Cap Edition rules and your lineup configuration.
Before you finalize the move
- Is the league set to daily or weekly lineup changes?
- Has this player’s slot locked, and does the contest allow late swap?
- Is the alternative eligible at the position and scheduled to play in the relevant period?
- Does your scoring format make benching costly, such as by removing points already earned?
- Does the league have an automatic-substitution rule, and would the replacement satisfy roster formation limits?
These are examples of platform rules, not universal settings. Private leagues and individual contests can differ, so use the active league’s rules and platform display as the final authority.
