Then account for the opponent, play design, quarterback timing, and how much evidence you have. No single pressure statistic—or one game—can explain the whole line.
Start with the actual lineup change
For each absent starter, note the replacement and the job that player is being asked to do. A backup stepping into his usual position presents a different question from a lineman moved across the line or a new addition learning a team’s protections.
- Record the missing starter and replacement at each position.
- Check whether the replacement is playing a familiar position or has been moved.
- Consider experience as context, not proof of fit. In NFL.com’s 2026 Packers coverage, head coach Matt LaFleur said of veteran signings, “There’s going to be a learning curve there.”
The key question is not simply whether a backup is experienced. It is whether that player can perform this role, in this offense, against the assignments and matchups in front of him.
Evaluate pass protection separately from run blocking
For pass plays, identify what the metric counts
Pressure, sacks, quarterback hits, knockdowns, and pass-block wins are related, but they are not interchangeable. Before comparing players or games, check the provider’s definition and use the same one on both sides of the comparison.

Pro Football Focus’s pass-protection tracker describes streaks as consecutive pass-blocking snaps without a selected outcome, such as a sack, knockdown, or any pressure. A streak is a run of snaps, not a pressure rate. PFF’s pass-block win rate asks whether a blocker lost the rep; a blocker can be charged with a loss even when the quarterback releases the ball before a pressure is recorded. The two measures answer different questions.
For runs, establish the concept and assignment
A rushing lane or a tackle for loss does not, by itself, identify which lineman failed. First determine the run concept and what each blocker was assigned to do. NFL Next Gen Stats’ 2026 overview describes tracking that includes run concepts, the defender assigned to each offensive lineman, and matchups that can create lanes. Use that play-level context to assess whether a blocker executed his job, rather than crediting or blaming one player from the outcome alone.

Classify how a protection or block failed
When watching a play, distinguish among a physical loss, an assignment or communication breakdown, a protection stressed by the defense, and an unfamiliar role. Those causes can look similar in a box score but point to different problems.
- Physical loss: The blocker is beaten in the matchup.
- Assignment or communication error: Blockers fail to identify or pass off a threat correctly.
- Protection stress: The defensive pressure challenges the protection plan or leaves more threats than the blocking scheme can account for.
- Role unfamiliarity: A player is performing a task or position that is not his usual one.
NFL.com’s 2026 report on Green Bay described both miscommunications and mental breakdowns and physical deficiencies. That example is a useful reminder to avoid reducing every lost rep to athletic ability.

Read team pressure results with quarterback and protection context
A team pressure figure does not necessarily measure only the five offensive linemen. NFL.com’s 2026 Packers report notes that protection can also involve running backs and tight ends. Quarterback release timing matters too: a quick throw can prevent a pressure from developing, while a longer time to throw gives rushers more opportunity.
The same report offered a Green Bay-specific snapshot through three weeks of the 2026 season: TruMedia reported a 44.7% pressure percentage allowed, 0.92 yards before contact per rush, and 31 quarterback hits on Jordan Love dropbacks. Next Gen Stats put Love’s average time to throw at 2.49 seconds over that comparison period. These figures are examples of why pass pressure, run production, and quarterback timing should be considered together; they are not league-wide cutoffs for deciding whether an injured line is good or bad.

Account for continuity without treating it as a cure-all
A changed five-man group may need to adjust its roles and communication. In NFL.com’s 2026 account of Green Bay’s Week 1 problems, offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich connected lineup turnover with the challenge of continuity and described rotating linemen in practice to identify the best five. That is an example of a team response, not proof that continuity alone determines performance.
When comparing two lineups, note how many positions changed and whether players are working in familiar roles. Then look for play-level evidence of better assignment recognition and execution; the lineup change itself does not establish that performance improved or declined.

Make comparisons that the evidence can support
Compare replacements or lineups across the same dimensions, and keep player-level evidence distinct from team-level outcomes.
Quick Recap
| Question | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Availability and role | Who is out, who replaces them, and whether the replacement is at a familiar position | The starter’s absence matters through the actual player and assignment filling the role. |
| Pass protection | Rep outcomes and pressure allowed using one provider’s consistent definitions | A pass-block win, pressure, sack, and pressure-free streak measure different things. |
| Communication | Assignment recognition, exchanges, and protection breakdowns on plays | A mental or communication error is not the same as being physically beaten. |
| Run blocking | Execution within the run concept and the blocker’s assignment | The final lane or tackle does not identify responsibility on its own. |
| Context and sample | Opponent, play type, quarterback timing, and number of observed plays | A game-specific result is not automatically a stable evaluation of a replacement. |
| Continuity | Changes in the five-man group and role familiarity | Continuity can be relevant context, but it does not prove cause or outcome. |
A practical evaluation can follow this sequence:
- Map every absence to the replacement, position, and role.
- Separate pass-blocking evidence from run-blocking evidence.
- Use film or play-level detail to classify the cause of each failure.
- Check whether a team pressure result includes backs or tight ends, and consider quarterback release timing.
- Compare only the same metric definition and provider across players or games.
- State the sample and opponent context, and treat a one-game result as evidence about that game rather than a lasting verdict.
