Make the decision by checking the latest official status, reading the full practice trend, estimating the player’s likely role, and comparing that risk with your best available alternative. Recheck close to lineup lock.
Check the current official injury report
Find the tight end on the NFL’s official injury report. Check the listed injury, practice participation, and game status for the current week, then return to the report before setting your lineup. A search result or article from a previous week may no longer reflect the player’s status.
The report is a football-status update, not a medical evaluation. It does not establish clinical clearance, readiness for a full workload, or the risk of reinjury.
Read the practice trend, not just one entry
Look across the week and ask whether participation is improving, holding steady, or getting worse. A single practice entry is only one piece of context: participation does not guarantee the player will be available on game day, and it does not show how much he will play.

Separate availability from expected role
“Will he be active?” and “Will he have his usual role?” are different questions. A tight end can suit up after an absence and still have an uncertain share of snaps, routes, or targets. Before treating him as a normal starter, look for reliable team reporting or evidence from his use after a previous return. There is no universal return-game workload established for tight ends.
Use the official designation alongside the practice trend and the latest reliable updates. Treat “Questionable” as one input—not a guarantee, a role projection, or a precise probability of playing. No dependable player-specific probability estimate is established here.

Compare him with your actual alternative
Make the choice based on your roster and league scoring, not the tight end’s name or active status alone. Compare the questionable or returning player with the best replacement you can actually start:
- Availability: How likely is each option to be available when your lineup locks?
- Role: If active, what involvement is reasonably expected in snaps, routes, and targets?
- Range of outcomes: How does the risky player’s potential upside compare with the replacement’s more dependable floor?
- Matchup: Does either option have a meaningful matchup advantage?
- Flexibility: Can you wait for more information without losing the chance to start your backup?
Plan around kickoff and lineup lock
If possible, keep a later-playing backup available when your questionable tight end also plays later. Check your league’s specific lineup-lock rules and decide on a contingency before the backup’s game begins. Lock behavior varies by league settings, so do not assume you can swap a player after kickoff.
