Choose the market that matches what your analysis actually predicts: moneyline for which team wins, point spread for the winning margin relative to a handicap, or over/under for the combined score. Then assess the offered price and check the applicable sportsbook rules and local law. None of these market types is inherently easier to predict or more profitable.
What each college football bet asks you to predict
| Market | Your prediction is about | What does not settle the bet |
|---|---|---|
| Moneyline | Which team wins outright | The size of the winning margin |
| Point spread | Whether a team wins or loses by more or less than the posted handicap | Simply picking the outright winner |
| Over/under (total) | Whether the stated scoring total goes above or below the posted line | Which team wins |
The NFL’s explainer describes the moneyline as a wager focused on “who will be the winner of the match.” Although the explainer is not college-football-specific, the distinction between outright winner and spread applies to these market definitions. NFL: What is the point spread?
Moneyline: pick the outright winner
A moneyline has no point handicap: the bet is on one team to win. Its odds determine the potential payout, so the price matters alongside your view of the matchup. The North Carolina Problem Gambling Program summarizes it as “Moneyline Betting on a team to win or lose,” and notes that payouts depend on sportsbook odds. North Carolina Problem Gambling Program guide, dated March 11, 2025
How American odds describe the payout
- Positive odds: The number shows potential profit on a $100 wager. For example, +150 means a $100 winning wager earns $150 in profit, with the stake also returned under the example’s ordinary payout convention.
- Negative odds: The number shows how much you must wager to earn $100 in profit. At -170, a $170 winning wager earns $100 in profit.
Those -170 and +150 figures are examples from the Ohio Lottery’s definitions, not current college-football prices. Odds describe payout terms, not a guaranteed result or a neutral forecast. Ohio Lottery: Definitions

Point spread: predict performance against a handicap
A spread assigns the favorite a points handicap and gives the underdog a corresponding head start for settlement. You are judging the final margin against the line, not just which team wins. For example, with a favorite at -6.5, the favorite must win by at least seven points to cover. The underdog covers by winning outright or losing by six points or fewer. This is an illustrative example in the North Carolina guide, not a forecast for any particular game. North Carolina Problem Gambling Program guide
That distinction matters: a team can win the game but fail to cover the spread, while an underdog can lose and still cover. Select this market when your analysis is about whether the teams’ likely margin is larger or smaller than the handicap.
Over/under: predict scoring, not the winner
A game total—also called an over/under—asks whether the combined points scored by both teams will be higher or lower than the posted number. With a total of 45.5, the over wins at 46 or more combined points; the under wins at 45 or fewer. The example is from the North Carolina guide, not a current line. Some sportsbooks also offer a team total, which concerns one team’s points rather than the combined game score. Check the market label before placing a wager. How to match the market to your analysis
| If your analysis supports… | Market that matches the question | What to scrutinize |
|---|---|---|
| One team winning, without relying on a particular margin | Moneyline | Whether the odds offer terms you consider appropriate for your assessment |
| A team outperforming or falling short of the handicap | Point spread | The spread number and whether an exact-line push is possible |
| More or fewer combined points than the game total | Over/under | The total line; confirm whether it is a game total or a team total |
Use the market as a way to express the claim your analysis supports, not as a shortcut to a better wager. A likely winner is not automatically good value at any price, and a larger underdog payout does not by itself make that selection attractive. The available sources do not establish that one of these market types is easier to beat or more profitable.

Pushes, settlement rules, and legality
With a whole-number spread or total, the final margin or score can land exactly on the line. That may result in a push, in which the stake is returned, but settlement depends on the operator’s rules. Half-point lines avoid an exact-line result for ordinary whole-point football scoring. Check the relevant market rules for treatment of overtime, voids, and other settlement details rather than assuming every sportsbook handles them identically.
Availability and legality depend on where you are and which operator you use. North Carolina’s statute defines college sports in terms of competition involving a participant competing on behalf of or under the sponsorship of a postsecondary institution, and includes moneyline and over-under wagers among its enumerated wager types; that is a North Carolina legal definition, not a nationwide rule. Rules also vary by operator and jurisdiction. For example, FanDuel’s Ohio terms list moneyline, spread/handicap, and totals among accepted wager types, and state that the rules may be revised subject to Ohio regulatory approval. That document applies to that operator’s Ohio offering, not every sportsbook. FanDuel Sportsbook, Ohio terms, published March 9, 2026 The UK Gambling Commission likewise requires its licensees to display betting rules covering matters including voiding, odds availability, outcome determination, and maximum payout; this is a UK licensing requirement, not a US rule.
