If none fits, check waivers or free agents and confirm your league’s add rules. The right replacement depends on your roster, scoring format and available players.
What to do first when a player is ruled out
- Verify the status for this game. Check the team’s latest official report or inactive announcement rather than relying on an older app badge or projection. ESPN Fan Support says, “ESPN Fantasy Football uses the NFL’s official injury/inactive list to update a player’s injury status” on its Players on Injured Reserve (IR) page, updated August 18, 2026. NFL.com also advises managers to keep up with player news in its fantasy football guide.
- Check the player-specific lock time. Open your team or lineup page and use the deadline and lock state shown by your platform. A player in an early Thursday or other early game may lock before the rest of your lineup.
- If the slot is open, replace the player. Start an eligible, available bench player at the vacated position or flex slot. A benched player’s score does not count toward your weekly total under NFL.com’s guide.
- If your bench has no suitable option, check the player pool. Look at free agents and waivers, and confirm the claim deadline, processing time, roster limit and any required drop before counting on an addition.
How to choose a replacement
There is no universal best substitute: the answer depends on who is available and how your league scores players. Compare candidates using the factors that affect whether they can fill the slot and contribute:
- Eligibility: Can the player fill the exact position or flex slot?
- Timing: Does his game begin before your platform’s lineup deadline or waiver processing?
- Expected role: Use current team news to judge whether he is likely to see meaningful work.
- Scoring fit: Consider your league’s scoring categories and format, not just a generic ranking.
- Roster cost: Compare keeping a bench option with dropping a player or spending waiver priority or FAAB.
NFL.com’s guide points managers to player news and rankings as lineup resources. Treat them as inputs to your decision, not a guarantee of a particular score.
What lineup locks and waivers mean in practice
Lineup deadlines are platform- and league-specific
NFL.com’s guide describes players locking when their NFL game starts, and NFL.com’s 2025 Fantasy Football Official Rules say a player’s status can be changed before his NFL team is scheduled to start. The rules also note that the NFL.com system clock may differ from a manager’s own clock. These are NFL.com examples, not universal rules for every fantasy platform or custom league. Follow the actual deadline shown in your league.

Waivers may delay access to a replacement
A free agent may be available to add directly, while a player on waivers must be claimed and allocated under your league’s waiver priority or budget system. An add can require dropping someone to remain within the roster limit. Check your league’s rules and timing; a player whose game begins before waivers process may not be usable for this lineup decision.
Should you move the player to an IR slot?
Do not assume that being ruled out for one game makes a player eligible for a platform’s injured-reserve slot. On ESPN, Out or IR status can qualify a player for an IR slot when the league has that feature; eligibility follows the platform’s injury designation, which ESPN says it updates from the NFL’s official list. ESPN also says a roster becomes invalid if a player in an IR slot changes from Out to having no injury designation. Check your platform’s current IR rules and the effect on other roster moves before using the slot.

What if the player is ruled out after the lineup locks?
First check your league settings to see whether an inactive-player auto-swap or another substitution feature is enabled. Do not assume it will replace the player: NFL Fantasy search results describe an Auto-Swap Inactives feature, but its detailed behavior is not established here. If your platform has no applicable setting and the player’s slot is locked, you may be unable to make a manual change for that game.
