Look for the base game, its platform, and whether it is a physical disc or cartridge, a digital code, or a download. Collectibles may accompany a game—or be the entire product.
Start with the contents list, not the edition name
Look for an explicit entry such as “base game,” “standard edition game,” or equivalent. A publisher may list the game separately from the statue, art book, soundtrack, or other items in a collector’s set. If the contents list names only merchandise and does not say that software is included, don’t assume the game comes with it.
For example, official SQUARE ENIX Store listings for FINAL FANTASY XVI distinguish the standard game package from collector’s items and digital contents. The product name alone is less informative than that itemized list.
Verify the platform and game format
Even when the game is included, confirm which version you are buying. Check that the listing names the platform—such as PlayStation, Xbox, or PC—and specifies whether the game is a physical disc or cartridge, a digital code, or a download. A box, steelbook, or game-themed product image does not establish that a playable copy is included or what format it takes.

Do not assume that two editions of the same title have identical contents. The Bandai Namco Entertainment America Store listing for the GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT Collector’s Edition itemizes a physical base game and collectibles; a separate Launch Edition listing has a base game and fewer extras. Those details apply to those listings, not to collector’s editions generally.
Separate the game from the extras
Sort each item in the listing into one of two groups: the playable game and additional merchandise or digital content. Statues, plush toys, cards, posters, apparel, art books, soundtracks, and steelbooks are not the base game unless the contents list separately says the game is included. Digital add-ons may be included alongside a physical game, but they are not a substitute for the base game.

- 1TB SSD, Disc Drive (attached to console)

An official SQUARE ENIX Store DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined Collector’s Set listing, for example, describes a physical standard-edition game, digital add-ons, and a plush. Treat this as an example of one title’s contents, not a template for another bundle.
Read the date as a timing detail, not proof of game inclusion
A future date can appear on a preorder for a game or on a merchandise listing. Bandai Namco’s shipping and orders policy says: “For Merchandise products, release date is approximate, any changes will be updated on the product page.” Best Buy likewise notes in its Entertainment Pre-Order FAQs: “These release dates are provided to Best Buy by our suppliers and are subject to change without notice.” Neither a preorder label nor an estimated date tells you what is inside the product.

Compare listings before you order
If a marketplace title, listing image, or short description leaves room for doubt, compare the retailer’s contents list with the publisher’s current product page. Check these details on the exact edition and regional listing:
- Base game: Is it explicitly included, or does the list describe merchandise only?
- Platform: Which console or PC version does the listing specify?
- Format: Is the game physical, a digital code, or a download?
- Extras: Which physical collectibles and digital add-ons are named?
- Date: Is it a planned game release date, an approximate merchandise availability date, or a delivery estimate?
- Listing status: Is the exact edition currently available to preorder, in stock, waitlisted, or otherwise unavailable?
Reopen the product page before buying: contents, dates, stock status, and delivery timing can change. Delivery can also depend on location and shipping method; the SQUARE ENIX DRAGON QUEST VII listing, for instance, cautions that delivery depends on the carrier.
