Immortals of Aveum is worth considering if you want a single-player first-person shooter built around spell combat and fantasy-world exploration. Its color-coded magic gives familiar shooting a distinctive hook, but juggling abilities can feel awkward on a controller, and repeated enemies and arenas may wear down the campaign. The story and characters are a matter of taste: the worldbuilding has appeal, while some critics found the writing and protagonist less successful.
What kind of game is Immortals of Aveum?
Published by Electronic Arts under its EA Originals label and developed by Ascendant Studios, Immortals of Aveum is a single-player, first-person magic shooter. It launched on August 22, 2023, for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. On PC, EA lists the EA app, Steam and Epic Games Store as options. EA’s game page and PlayStation’s PS5 listing confirm the platforms and date.

You play as Jak, an “Unforeseen”—a person whose magical ability appears later in life—who joins an elite order of battlemages during the Everwar. General Kirkan recruits him. Jak is played by Darren Barnet, with Gina Torres as Kirkan. The conflict gives the game a conventional fantasy-war frame for its mix of shooting, traversal, lore and character scenes.
How does the magic-shooter combat work?
Combat keeps the movement and encounter structure of a first-person shooter, but replaces guns with three colors of magic: blue, green and red. The attacks are intended to be chained with counters, so success depends on selecting and combining spells rather than relying on a conventional firearm loadout. EA advertises more than 25 spells, 80 talents and hundreds of magical gear pieces to discover, upgrade or craft. Those are publisher feature counts; they do not guarantee that the options feel equally distinct or well balanced in play. EA’s listing describes the system.
#1 Best Overall
Early encounters can make the color system feel like a combat puzzle: matching attacks and responses gives the magic a clearer identity than simply firing different-looking projectiles. But the many options also create a handling challenge. GameSpot reviewer Jordan Ramée, who played about 20 hours on PS5 using a developer-provided code, praised the early combat’s puzzle quality while finding the number of options difficult to manage with a controller. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a platform-wide test. Read the GameSpot review.
Why there is no traditional weapon wheel
The interface uses a compact Fury Spell tray rather than a conventional FPS weapon wheel. In a May 2023 hands-on article, PlayStation Blog described the interface and exploration systems. Ascendant UI artist Jim Ingraham explained the design choice: “We really wanted to focus on the frenetic gameplay… a lot of times when you implement a wheel you have to think about slowing things down, it creates a tactical moment which is cool but it also very obviously sets a pacing and pulls you out of the game. We made a conscious decision not to do that” (PlayStation Blog).
The trade-off is apparent: avoiding a pause-and-select wheel helps maintain the fight’s momentum, but players still need to keep track of a dense toolkit while aiming and moving. If you prefer a simple set of weapons with straightforward controls, that complexity may be a sticking point.
Does the campaign stay engaging?
Exploration adds optional areas, puzzles, currency and gear alongside the combat. Finding routes off the main path can reward curiosity and feed into the progression system, giving the campaign more to do than move from one arena to the next. PlayStation Blog’s hands-on coverage discusses those areas and rewards, as well as the Fury Spell interface. See the hands-on report.

The weakness is that combat variety does not necessarily hold across the full adventure. Ramée’s GameSpot review criticizes repeated enemy and arena designs, along with the story and protagonist, despite finding the worldbuilding and lore interesting. The result is a campaign with a worthwhile central idea, but some of its fights can feel more familiar than the magic system initially promises. GameSpot’s review details that assessment.
Story reactions differ. PC Gamer’s review describes a conventional fantasy setting, a predictable twist and dialogue it found irritating; that is an individual critical perspective, not a universal verdict. Read PC Gamer’s review. The game is more likely to work for you if you enjoy fantasy lore and are comfortable with familiar genre conventions than if sharp dialogue and surprising characters are your main reasons to play.

EA’s current PC listing gives these minimum requirements. They are the publisher’s stated baseline, not a guarantee of smooth performance at a particular resolution or frame rate. No independent benchmark or comparative console performance test is established here. Check EA’s PC requirements page for the current listing.
| Requirement | EA-listed minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit or later |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-8700K |
| Memory | 16 GB dual-channel |
| Graphics | AMD Radeon RX 580 with 8 GB or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 with 8 GB |
| DirectX | Version 12 |
| Storage | 70 GB; an SSD is recommended |
| Other | Broadband internet |
EA says Windows 11 is recommended for systems using Intel 12th- or 13th-generation CPUs. The listing does not establish performance above its minimum specifications, so compare your exact hardware with the requirements rather than treating them as a performance promise.
What controls and accessibility options are listed for PS5?
PlayStation’s PS5 page lists stick sensitivity and inversion adjustments, control reminders, and the ability to play without motion controls, touch controls, controller vibration or adaptive trigger effects. It also says gameplay and cinematics can be paused while playing offline. Story subtitles cover the main story and main characters only. These details are specific to the PS5 listing; they should not be assumed to describe every platform. Check PlayStation’s listing for its full feature details.
Which platform should you choose, and what does it cost?
EA lists the game for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but the available evidence does not compare image quality, frame rates or platform performance. The practical choice is therefore the system you already own and, for PC, whether your hardware meets EA’s stated minimums. If controller comfort matters, the spell-management complexity described above is worth weighing before choosing a console version.
Current prices, retailer stock and edition availability are not established here; check the store in your region before buying. For context only, EA’s August 2023 launch announcement gave US list prices of $59.99 for PC and $69.99 for consoles, with higher launch prices for Deluxe Editions. Those are historical launch prices, not current offers. EA’s launch announcement gives the original pricing and release information.
Quick Recap
Who should play it?
- Try it if: you want a single-player FPS with a fantasy setting, like experimenting with different magical attacks, and enjoy exploring for puzzles and gear.
- Think twice if: you want uncomplicated controller inputs, consistently novel encounters, or a story driven by especially distinctive dialogue and characters.
- On PC: compare your components against EA’s listed minimums, but do not assume those specifications guarantee a particular level of performance.
