MLB Postseason Pitching Rules: Rest Days, Roster Limits and Pitching Changes (2026)

MLB playoff teams can carry 13 pitchers on a 26-player series roster. Rest is not set by a postseason pitch-count mandate, while the three-batter minimum limits most mid-inning pitching changes.

For the 2026 MLB postseason, each club submits a 26-player roster before every series and may carry no more than 13 pitchers. There is no postseason pitch-count rule in the MLB sources cited here that automatically requires a set number of rest days. A reliever is generally subject to the three-batter minimum, and position players can pitch only in defined exceptions.

How many pitchers can MLB teams carry in the playoffs?

MLB’s 2026 postseason guidance sets a 26-player roster for each series, with a maximum of 13 pitchers. Clubs file a roster before a series and can submit a different one before the next. The 28-player roster and 14-pitcher maximum apply from September 1 through the end of the regular season, not to playoff rosters. MLB’s 2026 roster explainer and its active roster glossary distinguish the limits.

Who is eligible?

MLB’s September 30, 2026 explainer says players who were on a club’s 40-man roster before September 1, as well as players on the 60-day injured list entering September, are generally eligible. An injury-replacement route may apply to a player already in the organization before September 1 who meets the applicable injured-list time requirement. Players acquired in September or later do not qualify through the normal route. Check the current league announcement for the precise eligibility rules for a particular season.

Can a team replace an injured player during a series?

A club may request permission from the Commissioner’s Office to replace a player injured during a series; it is not an automatic substitution. A pitcher must be replaced by another pitcher, and a position player by another position player. The replacement cannot play for the rest of that round or the following round, if the team advances. MLB’s postseason roster-rules glossary describes this restriction.

Do MLB playoff pitchers have mandatory rest days?

The MLB roster and rule pages cited here do not set a postseason pitch-count threshold that forces a pitcher to rest a specified number of days. A day off on the calendar is a recovery opportunity, not a league-mandated rest period. How a club uses its starters and bullpen depends on the schedule, recent workload and available pitchers.

Rest intervals therefore vary with the actual series dates, travel and any gaps between games. A team-specific answer requires checking its current schedule alongside pitchers’ recent appearances; the roster limits alone do not establish who is available.

Why the 2020 format is not a template

MLB’s 2020 postseason format had no days off within a series in the first three rounds, a temporary arrangement that compressed recovery time. It does not establish a standing rest rule or describe the 2026 calendar. MLB’s 2020 schedule announcement documents that format.

Can a manager change pitchers in the middle of an inning?

Yes, but a pitcher generally must face at least three batters or finish the half-inning before being replaced. The exception is an incapacitating injury or illness that prevents the pitcher from continuing. This three-batter minimum applies to starters and relievers; MLB’s rule glossary explains the requirement.

How the minimum works

  • A pitcher who enters with two outs and records the third out by facing one batter has finished the half-inning and satisfied the rule.
  • If that pitcher returns to begin the next inning, the pitcher must face two more batters unless the half-inning ends first.
  • Once the minimum is met, the manager may make a standard pitching substitution.

So a manager generally cannot bring in a reliever for just one matchup and remove that pitcher before the minimum is met, unless the pitcher finishes the half-inning or the injury-or-illness exception applies.

Can position players pitch in the MLB playoffs?

Position players are generally barred from pitching, subject to specific exceptions in MLB’s roster rules. They may pitch if they qualify as a two-way player, in extra innings after the ninth, or when their team is leading or trailing by more than six runs at the time they enter. “More than six” means a margin of seven runs or greater—not exactly six. MLB’s active roster glossary lists the exceptions; the league announced the position-player pitching limits in its 2020 rules update.

What to check when evaluating a team’s pitching options

The rules set boundaries; they do not determine a club’s game plan. To assess a team’s choices, check the relevant facts in this order:

  1. Roster: Count the pitchers on the current 26-player series roster, up to the 13-pitcher cap, and note bench depth and any qualifying two-way player.
  2. Calendar: Check the series dates, travel and actual off-days. Do not assume a particular rest interval from the round alone.
  3. Availability: Review recent appearances and workload alongside which starters and relievers the club has available. These are team-specific, changing facts rather than fixed league rules.
  4. Proposed change: For a mid-inning substitution, consider whether the pitcher has faced three batters, finished the half-inning, or must leave because of incapacitating injury or illness.
  5. Injury contingency: If a series-roster replacement is requested, account for the required league permission and the replacement’s ineligibility for the rest of the current round and the next round, if applicable.

Roster eligibility and rule details can change by season. For a particular matchup, use the current MLB roster announcement and series schedule rather than carrying forward a prior year’s dates or eligibility cutoffs.
