A starting pitcher is the first pitcher to throw for a team; an opener is a short-use reliever chosen to begin some games, usually before a second pitcher takes the bulk innings. The choice comes down to whether a favorable first-inning matchup and a better route through the batting order are worth using a reliever early and asking the bullpen to cover more outs.
What is the difference between a starting pitcher and an opener?
MLB credits a game started to the pitcher who throws the team’s first pitch. There is no minimum innings requirement for that credit, although a pitcher generally must work at least five innings to be eligible for a win. MLB’s Games Started glossary explains the official designation.
An opener is typically a reliever assigned to pitch briefly at the beginning, often to face the opponent’s top hitters. A second pitcher—sometimes called the headliner—usually follows and handles most of the game. The opener is therefore the starter in the official sense, but not necessarily the pitcher expected to provide the length associated with a traditional start. MLB’s opener glossary describes the roles.
An opener is not the same as a bullpen game
In an opener plan, one pitcher begins with a specific short assignment and a designated follower is expected to cover the bulk innings. A bullpen game instead uses a succession of relievers for short spells, without the same expectation that one follower will take over for most of the contest. Nor is every short start an opener: an outing cut short by injury or poor performance is not a planned opener strategy. MLB’s retrospective discussion of the tactic distinguishes these cases and uses statistical screens that still require judgment. MLB’s account of the opener’s first year explains those distinctions.

Why use an opener?
Target the top of the lineup
The batting order is known at the start of the game, and its first hitters are often among the opponent’s strongest. A manager may choose a reliever whose pitching style or handedness matches up well with those hitters, then bring in the follower for the middle innings. The idea is to use the opener’s short stint where a particular matchup could matter most—not to assume that every reliever is better than every starter, or that the first inning is always the most dangerous. The expected benefit depends on the actual lineup and pitchers involved. MLB describes this matchup rationale in its Games Started glossary and opener glossary.
Manage when the follower sees hitters
Starting pitchers’ results tend to worsen each time they face the batting order again. MLB attributes the pattern to possible fatigue, hitter familiarity and adjustment, and the fact that the strongest hitters typically lead off a third trip through the order. Its aggregate figures for starting pitchers from 2016–2025 show the trend:

| Trip through the order | AVG | OBP | SLG | OPS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First | .243 | .309 | .404 | .713 |
| Second | .255 | .318 | .428 | .747 |
| Third | .265 | .329 | .452 | .780 |
These are league-wide associations, not a prediction for an individual pitcher or proof that using an opener causes better results. An opener can change the point at which the follower enters the lineup cycle, potentially helping that pitcher avoid a third encounter with the top hitters. Managers also often remove conventional starters before a difficult third trip, so lineup exposure matters even when no opener is used. See MLB’s explanation of the third-time-through-the-order penalty.
How do teams decide whether an opener is worth it?
There is no fixed formula disclosed for MLB clubs. The choice balances the matchup opportunity against the follower’s expected length, the available starter’s quality, and the bullpen’s ability to absorb an early reliever appearance.

| Decision factor | May favor an opener | May favor a conventional starter |
|---|---|---|
| First-inning matchup | A reliever offers a particularly favorable fit against the scheduled top hitters. | The expected matchup gain is small, or the conventional starter is already the best fit. |
| Bulk-inning option | A capable follower can take over and handle most of the game. | No clear follower can provide enough length. |
| Starter quality | The available conventional starter is a poor fit for the opening hitters or may be vulnerable to repeated exposure. | A dominant starter is available and expected to work deep. |
| Bullpen capacity | The relief staff can absorb an early appearance and still cover the remaining innings. | Recent workload or bullpen health makes an early commitment costly. |
| Game context | A high-urgency situation makes a favorable matchup worth using earlier. | A plan that preserves relievers and values starter length is preferable. |
The opener’s appearance is only one part of the calculation: the follower still must get through the middle innings, and other relievers may be needed afterward. If a conventional starter is likely to pitch effectively into the later innings, that length can outweigh a short-term matchup advantage. MLB’s postseason explainer discusses both the tactical case for an opener and the value of a dominant starter who can work deep. Read MLB’s postseason discussion.
Why starter length and bullpen health matter
The workload figures reported by The Associated Press show the context as of the 2024 MLB season, not a current 2026 league measure: starters averaged 5.22 innings and 85.5 pitches per start in 2024. The AP described those as the highest averages since 2018 and 2019, respectively. Only four pitchers reached 200 innings in 2024, compared with 34 in 2014. These numbers help explain why teams value outings that reach the sixth or seventh inning, but they do not show that openers caused or solved workload changes.

Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy put the bullpen concern plainly: “And one of the biggest ways is those starters getting through that first bulk and getting you into the sixth or seventh.” The figures and comment were reported by The Associated Press in 2025. An opener plan may improve one matchup, but it also spends a reliever early and leaves the staff responsible for all remaining outs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the opener always work better?
No. The strategy is conditional, not a universal upgrade. Its value depends on who is batting, whether the opener actually has a favorable matchup, how well the follower is suited to a bulk role, and what the bullpen can cover. When a strong conventional starter can work deep—or when relievers need rest—the standard start may be the better decision. Available sources explain the tactical logic, but do not establish a causal run-prevention advantage, disclose clubs’ private decision models, or provide a league-wide count of opener games for 2026.
