For a first tabletop game of Magic: The Gathering, start by comparing a Magic Starter Kit with the Foundations Beginner Box: choose the kit for two ready-to-play decks, or the box for a guided tutorial and mix-and-match decks. Before buying, ask a nearby participating game store whether it has free 2026 Welcome Decks or a Magic Academy event.
Choose the learning format first
The key difference is how the first game is taught. Wizards’ MTG Product Guide lists the Starter Kit under “Get Started,” calls it best for learning how to play, and says it includes what is needed to play and teach Magic. A Starter Kit is the straightforward choice when a beginner and a friend want to sit down with ready-to-play decks.
The Foundations Beginner Box is designed for more guided learning. It includes a turn-by-turn tutorial, then offers themed half-decks that can be combined for further games. If the new player would rather follow instructions than learn informally from a friend, this format is a better fit.
Compare the main starting options
| Option | What it includes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Magic Starter Kit | The documented Final Fantasy edition contains two preconstructed 60-card decks, two deck boxes, four double-sided tokens, and Arena code cards in select regions. Contents vary by edition; see Wizards’ Final Fantasy Starter Kit announcement. | A beginner and a friend who want to play paired, ready-to-use decks. |
| Foundations Beginner Box | Ten themed 20-card Jumpstart decks, two “How to Play” guides, reference cards, two playmats, and two spindown life counters. The tutorial walks players through a first game turn by turn. See the Beginner Box contents guide. | A learner who wants structured instruction and variety by combining half-decks. |
| 2026 Welcome Decks | Five color-specific, 40-card monocolor decks made with Standard-legal Foundations cards. Participating WPN stores distribute them while supplies last, beginning April 24, 2026. Details are in Wizards’ Welcome Deck announcement. | Someone who can visit a participating store and wants a free introductory teaching deck. |
| Foundations Starter Collection | 387 cards, three Play Boosters, 90 basic lands, tokens, reference cards, a deck-building booklet, and a click wheel. Wizards positions it for players who have learned the basics and are ready to build a first deck. See the Starter Collection contents guide. | A learner moving from learning the rules to building and tuning decks. |
| Marvel Super Heroes Beginner Box | Ten 20-card Jumpstart half-decks, including two tutorial decks, plus guides, reference cards, tokens, and playmats. Source: Wizards’ Marvel Super Heroes Beginner Box contents. | A Marvel fan who wants the Beginner Box’s guided structure in that theme. |
Understand what comes in each format
Starter Kit: two complete decks for paired games
Starter Kit contents depend on the edition, so check the product listing rather than assuming every kit includes the same cards or extras. For example, Wizards’ May 30, 2025 announcement for the Final Fantasy edition lists two preconstructed 60-card decks and two deck boxes, as well as tokens and Arena code cards in select regions. It is explicitly themed around Final Fantasy, making it a natural gift possibility for someone who already likes that setting—but a theme preference does not establish that its gameplay is easier.

Beginner Box: a lesson, then modular play
Each Foundations Beginner Box Jumpstart half-deck contains 20 cards; shuffle two together to make a deck for play. The Vampires and Cats tutorial decks are arranged for the guided lesson, so keep them in their supplied order if following that tutorial. Afterward, the other themed half-decks let players try different combinations without immediately building a deck card by card.
Welcome Deck: a store-distributed introduction
Welcome Decks are not two complete 60-card decks or a retail substitute for a Starter Kit. Each 2026 deck is a 40-card monocolor teaching deck. Wizards says participating WPN stores distribute them while supplies last, so ask a local store about its supply and distribution plan before making a trip.

Use a local store if you want in-person help
Magic Academy offers Learn to Play and Deck Building events at local game stores. A Beginner Box can provide guidance at home, while an event gives a new player a chance to learn in person; schedules and participation depend on the store. Wizards’ Magic Academy announcement explains the event types and recommends checking with a local game store.
The Foundations product page also points new players toward Magic Academy and describes its hands-on guided deck experiences, reference booklet, playmats, and bonus decks for jump-in play with a friend. See Magic: The Gathering Foundations for the product overview.
