Choose one that gives you dependable chances to attack while letting you avoid the boss’s moves, and account for your comfort with its controls, its evolution level, and the game’s difficulty. The framework below uses Kirby and the Forgotten Land as a worked example; ability matchups should not be carried across Kirby games without checking that game’s roster and mechanics.
What makes an ability a good boss choice?
Kirby can inhale certain enemies and copy their abilities, which provide attacks and other ways to engage opponents. That basic idea is consistent with the series, but the available abilities and how they work vary by game. Kirby’s official Copy Ability overview describes the series mechanic, while Nintendo’s Kirby and the Forgotten Land page describes that game’s 3D platforming and boss stages.
For a particular boss, weigh four factors rather than relying on a universal tier list:
- Attack opportunity: Can you land hits reliably at the distance and during the openings the boss gives you?
- Defense and evasion: Can the ability help you avoid an incoming move, or can you move safely while using it?
- Execution: Are its attacks and movement comfortable for you to perform under pressure?
- Progression and settings: Are you using an evolved form, and which difficulty mode is active?
This is a practical decision framework, not a measured damage ranking. The official guidance cited here does not establish complete damage values, frame data, or a boss-by-boss matchup ranking.

How to compare abilities in Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Compare the abilities available to you against the same questions. Because the answer depends on the boss’s attack patterns, its stage, your edition, and the difficulty setting, a recommendation is meaningful only when those details are clear.
Check how you can land attacks
Look for moments when the boss is exposed and ask whether the ability can reach it reliably. A move that feels powerful is not automatically useful if you struggle to connect with it; a move you can land consistently may be the more practical choice. The official sources do not supply a complete damage comparison, so treat this as a play-style judgment rather than a verified claim that one ability deals more damage.
Plan how you will avoid attacks
Defense matters alongside offense. Nintendo’s gameplay tips explain that you can hold L, R, ZL, or ZR to crouch-guard, then press the control stick in any direction to somersault. The game’s product page specifically notes that Drill can burrow underground to dodge enemy attacks. If a boss’s move is difficult for you to evade, favor an approach that gives you a dependable escape or use the game’s guard-and-somersault option.
Account for your execution comfort
Pick an ability whose attacks and movement you can use without losing track of the boss. A theoretically appealing move is a poor fit if its timing or positioning causes you to miss openings or take avoidable hits. This is a player-specific consideration, not an official ranking.

Check whether you have the evolved form
Rescuing Waddle Dees unlocks surprises that include the ability to evolve Copy Abilities. Nintendo also says evolved abilities can be changed back to their normal forms. When comparing options, note whether your recommendation assumes an evolved form; do not treat that form as available if you have not unlocked it.
Let difficulty shape the decision
Nintendo’s gameplay guide describes Spring-Breeze Mode as a lighter experience with more health and recommends it for players new to action games; Wild Mode is the more challenging setting. A newer player may reasonably prioritize a comfortable move set and safe opportunities to attack. A more confident player may put greater weight on the openings they can exploit. Those are practical suggestions, not Nintendo-endorsed ability rankings.
Rank #4
- Join Kirby in an unforgettable journey on a delightful 3D platforming adventure
- Explore a mysterious world with abandoned structures, remnants of a past civilization
- Copy enemies’ abilities like the new Drill and Ranger and use them to attack and explore. They can even be evolved to become stronger.
- Inhale real-world objects and transform using Mouthful Mode—swallowing a vending machine will allow you to shoot out cans
- Bring along a second player to control Bandana Waddle Dee and take on the forgotten world together
Confirm your edition before using an ability guide
The available forms depend on which edition and content you are playing. Nintendo Life’s guide, updated August 28, 2025, reports 12 upgradeable Copy Abilities in the original Kirby and the Forgotten Land and three additional abilities in the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition’s Star-Crossed World content. Those are counts for this game’s editions, not the Kirby franchise as a whole. Its blueprint and evolution guide and walkthrough and boss index distinguish the original content from Switch 2-only material.
A quick decision process before a boss
- Identify the game and edition. Confirm which Copy Abilities and evolved forms are actually available to you.
- Watch the boss’s openings. Choose an ability with attacks you can land during those opportunities.
- Choose an evasion plan. Consider the ability’s defensive movement, your ability to reposition, and the guard-and-somersault maneuver.
- Be honest about execution. Prefer moves you can use reliably over ones that feel difficult to control.
- Factor in progression and difficulty. State whether the recommendation assumes an evolved form and whether you are playing Spring-Breeze or Wild Mode.
If you recommend an ability to another player, name the game, edition, boss, difficulty, and form. That context makes the advice useful without implying a series-wide best pick or an unsupported damage ranking.
