The King of Fighters AFK is an idle RPG, so your early progress comes from building a useful team with the slots currently unlocked, improving both fighters and roster-wide bonuses, and claiming rewards when you return. Although the game is framed around 5v5 battles, Story Stage formations can expand to as many as nine fighters as you advance; the slots available depend on stage progress.
How many fighters can I put on a team?
The game’s official overview and store listing describe 5v5 battles. However, that is not the whole story for Story Stages: in an April 16, 2026 update, Netmarble expanded Story Stage deployment from five fighters to nine, with additional slots unlocking progressively according to stage progression. The number you can deploy therefore depends on the mode and your current progress, and later updates may change the rules.

Check the formation screen for the slots currently available to you, then make use of that space. Netmarble also said the update expanded Synergy Effect tiers, but its notice does not provide a complete current synergy chart.
What is a good beginner team?
There is no single best team established for every account: your available fighters, unlocked formation slots, stage, and encounter all matter. Build around the roster you actually have, and adjust positions and combinations when a battle is difficult rather than chasing a universal lineup.
#1 Best Overall
- Six years have passed since the last title in the series, and now KOF XV surpasses all of its predecessors in terms of graphics, systems, and online experience
- A total of 39 characters are participating - Classic popular characters, revived characters, new characters, and more
- The latest KOF Saga continues from the previous title in Story Mode
- The culmination of the series' battle system: Inheriting the series' traditional 3-on-3 team battle, KOF XV also features a new system
- Includes a Gallery with movies and voices, and a new DJ STATION with over 300 popular songs from the KOF series and more
- Cover useful roles: BlueStacks’ beginner guide suggests keeping a sturdy frontline while protecting damage and support fighters in the back. Treat this as general third-party advice, not a guaranteed formation for every encounter.
- Use the slots available: Story Stage deployment can grow with progression, so revisit your formation when new slots open.
- Consider synergy: Team combinations can matter, and the official update confirms that Synergy Effect tiers were expanded. The available sources do not establish a definitive top synergy or current best team.
What should I upgrade first?
Improve the lineup that is holding back your current progress, while also investing in systems that benefit the wider roster. BlueStacks describes two account-wide systems—Codex collections and Influence—but its priority recommendations are secondary guidance, not official upgrade rules.
Codex collections
According to BlueStacks, completing themed fighter collections in the Codex grants permanent bonuses to the roster. The guide names examples such as Three Sacred Treasures (Kyo, Iori, and Chizuru), School Girls’ Union, and Orochi Clan. Check collection progress as your roster grows; a fighter can contribute to an account-wide bonus as well as your active team.
Rank #2
- Celebrate the ultimate dream match in The King of Fighters 2002, one of the most respected and competitively balanced entries in SNK’s legendary fighting series
- Featuring a massive roster of classic fighters from across the KOF saga, The King of Fighters 2002 delivers fast-paced gameplay, tight mechanics and deep combo potential
- The return of the MAX Mode system adds strategic depth, allowing players to unleash devastating custom combos and powerful Desperation Moves at just the right moment
- With beautifully animated sprites, responsive controls and a soundtrack packed with high-energy themes, The King of Fighters 2002 remains a tournament favourite and a must-own title for NEOGEO collectors
- Game cartridge compatible with NEOGEO AES+ and NEOGEO AES video game systems.
Influence
BlueStacks describes Influence as a roster-wide stat system covering Attack, Defense/Penetration, and Health. Its suggested starting approach is to prioritize Attack and Health, then consider Defense as enemies become tougher. Let your current bottleneck and available currency guide that choice; this is a recommendation from a secondary guide, not a guaranteed optimal order.
Individual fighters and account-wide bonuses
When deciding where to put resources, compare the immediate help a fighter gives your current formation with the lasting value of Codex or Influence gains. The sources do not establish upgrade costs, level breakpoints, summon rates, reset rules, or a precise point at which to stop investing in a fighter.

How does offline progression work?
Netmarble presents the game as an idle RPG: its official overview says fighters can keep getting stronger while the game is off, and that you can claim rewards to strengthen them. Return periodically to collect available idle resources, then check your stage and roster before spending them. The official overview does not specify an exact reward accumulation rate or cap.
How should I progress when a stage is difficult?
- Check the current stage and formation. Look at the encounter and all slots unlocked for your Story Stage progress.
- Adjust placement and combinations. Try a sturdier frontline or safer positions for damage and support, and consider whether your team benefits from available synergies.
- Spend with both scales in mind. Improve fighters that can help now, but also review Codex collections and Influence for roster-wide gains.
- Return for rewards. Collect idle resources and review current events or login rewards before continuing.
This gives you a practical way to respond to a bottleneck without relying on unsupported level targets or a one-size-fits-all team prescription.
Rank #4
- All-new "Active Striker" system.
- Give assistance to your team members.
- Nostalgic characters from the SNK Universe.
- Hone your skills and strategy with your favorite strikers.
- This item is limited to only 3,000 copies available worldwide.
Are events, login rewards, or purchase offers permanent?
No. Event rewards and store promotions can change over time and may vary by region. The Google Play listing displayed “3,000 Draws, 210,000 Rubies, and 1 Legendary Fighter!” when accessed for this article; that is a listing promotion observed in 2026, not a standing guarantee. The same listing identifies in-app purchases. Check the current in-game notices and store listing for what is available to your account.
