There is no single best driver for every Mario Kart Tour ranked cup: the useful choice depended on the specific course, that driver’s top-shelf coverage and level. The game’s service ended on September 30, 2026, so this is a guide to interpreting historical cups and records—not advice for a live or upcoming competition.
Why there are no current ranked-cup picks
Nintendo Support says service for Mario Kart Tour was discontinued at 11:00 p.m. PT on September 29, 2026. Nintendo’s official game site gives September 30, 2026 as the service end date. Those dates describe the same shutdown from different time-zone presentations; the support notice specifies Pacific Time. Nintendo Support’s discontinuation notice and the official game site provide the respective statements.
That means there is no current ranked-cup meta to optimize. Driver rankings and course shelves below are useful only when looking back at a particular tour, saved result or historical course record.
How to choose a driver for a historical ranked course
Start with the exact course and tour date, not a general character tier list. A driver’s usefulness depended first on whether that driver covered the course’s top shelf, then on the driver’s level where the dated course data recorded level-based changes.

- Identify the course and tour. Do not compare drivers from different tours as though their course shelves were interchangeable.
- Check top-shelf eligibility for that course. Compare only the drivers shown as eligible in records for the relevant tour.
- Check the driver’s level. The community guide for Anniversary Tour 2026 Week 2 reports that some items gained top-shelf course coverage at levels 3, 6 or 8. Those thresholds are findings in that guide’s final-tour course records, not a universal rule for every driver or tour. See the Week 2 ranked course coverage guide.
- Keep the evidence dated. A course list documents its stated tour; it does not establish what was available in another tour.
This approach is more reliable than naming one character as “best” without specifying the course and date. It also avoids treating a broad tier ranking as proof that a driver was eligible—or the strongest choice—on a particular ranked course.
What “improve your score” means in the available records
Nintendo’s game description says players could collect and upgrade drivers, karts and gliders, and encourages trying different combinations to increase a score. It does not provide an exact scoring formula in the cited material, nor does it show that one driver maximized scores on every course. The Nintendo game description supports experimenting with combinations as general historical guidance, but not a guaranteed scoring prescription.

Keep race scoring separate from rankings. Nintendo’s All-Cup Ranking archive detail describes All-Cup Ranking as total points across cups during a tour and distinguishes it from the in-game tier ranking. That description explains the ranking categories; it is not an individual-race scoring formula.
How to read old driver tier lists
Treat tier lists as dated editorial snapshots, not universal course recommendations. Pocket Gamer’s driver tier list was updated September 2, 2026 and labels itself for version 3.7.0. It is a secondary assessment published shortly before service ended; it cannot establish the best driver for a specific course without matching course-level coverage for the relevant tour.

Which historical records may still be viewable
Nintendo’s shutdown information gives two different archive windows. Past All-Cup Rankings can be viewed through the end of September 2027, while in-app tour records and inquiries remain available until January 13, 2027. These are access windows for historical material, not signs that ranked competition continues.
