Ocarina of Time Remake vs. Remaster: What’s the Difference?

Ocarina of Time 3D reworks the N64 classic for 3DS, while Nintendo’s announced Switch 2 edition promises a broader rebuild. Here’s how remake and remaster fit.

Ocarina of Time 3D is best described as a remake or enhanced remake; Nintendo’s announced Switch 2 edition is also reasonably called a remake because Nintendo says it is “built from the ground up.” A remaster usually preserves the original game more substantially while improving its presentation or technical operation. Those are useful editorial labels, not formal categories with a universal boundary.

What do “remake” and “remaster” mean here?

A remaster generally keeps the original game substantially intact and updates how it looks, sounds, or runs on newer hardware. A remake reworks a broader part of the presentation or experience. There is no single official test that separates the terms, and Nintendo’s descriptions of Ocarina of Time versions show why the labels can overlap.

For this comparison, “remake” is the more useful label for editions with major visual or experience changes, while “remaster” suggests a more limited technical or presentation update. Nintendo’s wording supports describing the 3DS version as a remake and the announced Switch 2 edition as a remake in the everyday editorial sense; Nintendo does not call the latter a “remake” in its listing.

How the three versions compare

Version Platform and date Nintendo-confirmed details Useful label
Original Ocarina of Time Nintendo 64; Nintendo’s UK page also lists historical Wii and Wii U versions Nintendo describes the original Nintendo 64 game, its 3D visuals, combat system, and Link’s story opposing Ganondorf. Original release
Ocarina of Time 3D Nintendo 3DS; released June 17, 2011 Glasses-free stereoscopic 3D, a complete graphical overhaul, touch-based inventory, Circle Pad control, and gyro-based first-person aiming. Remake or enhanced remake
Ocarina of Time for Switch 2 Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive; scheduled for November 5, 2026 Nintendo says it is built from the ground up, with overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, enhanced controls, and modern camera movements. Remake is a reasonable description of the announced scope

Why is Ocarina of Time 3D called a remake?

The 3DS release is not simply the Nintendo 64 game displayed on a newer screen. Nintendo’s official product page describes a complete graphical overhaul and features that use the handheld’s hardware: stereoscopic 3D, touch-based inventory, Circle Pad analogue control, and gyro aiming. A Nintendo Iwata Asks interview search-result snippet also calls the project a remake. That is Nintendo’s usage in that interview, not a binding definition for every game release.

Why is the Switch 2 edition described as a remake?

Nintendo’s U.S. store listing says the game is “built from the ground up for the Nintendo Switch™ 2 system” and lists changes across visuals, cutscenes, dialogue, music, controls, and camera movement. That scope makes “remake” a reasonable shorthand, but the phrase “built from the ground up” and those features are Nintendo’s announced description—not evidence of hands-on performance or final quality.

Nintendo Singapore’s June 12, 2026 announcement says the Nintendo 64 classic returns “reborn exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.” The U.S. store specifies November 5, 2026; as of October 4, 2026, that release date is still in the future. It should not be confused with the already-released 3DS edition.

Which version should you compare or choose?

  • If you want the original reference point: the Nintendo 64 release is the classic version. Nintendo’s UK page also records historical Wii and Wii U versions; those listings do not establish that old digital purchase options remain available in every region or service.
  • If you want handheld-specific features: the 3DS edition adds stereoscopic 3D, a touch inventory, Circle Pad control, and gyro aiming. It is tied to Nintendo 3DS hardware.
  • If you want the announced broader overhaul: the Switch 2 edition promises audiovisual and control changes beyond a simple display or performance update. Its platform is Switch 2, and its announced release date is November 5, 2026.

Availability is a separate question from whether an edition is a remake or remaster. Nintendo says purchases through the Nintendo 3DS family and Wii U eShops ended March 27, 2023. That does not establish whether used physical copies or previously acquired downloads can still be accessed. Check current regional availability rather than assuming a historical listing is a current purchase option.

Bottom line on the labels

Ocarina of Time 3D is a 2011 3DS remake or enhanced remake, while the announced Switch 2 edition is fairly described as a remake because Nintendo says it is built from the ground up and lists wide-ranging changes. “Remaster” is a less fitting shorthand for either based on the changes Nintendo has documented. The distinction is descriptive, not an official taxonomy.
