Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCheck the local path between your PC, router and headset before buying new networking gear. For Steam Link and Virtual Desktop, connect the PC to the router by Ethernet where possible; connect the headset to a suitable 5 GHz Wi-Fi network (or 6 GHz where supported); and confirm the devices can communicate on the same local network. Then test from the room where you play. A fast internet speed test does not establish that this local connection is ready.
What to check before changing your setup
Wireless PC VR depends on the connection from the computer through the local network to the headset. The apps do not all publish identical requirements, so use the guidance for the streaming app you intend to use rather than treating one router specification as a universal rule.
- PC to router: Steam Link and Virtual Desktop recommend or require a wired PC connection in their published guidance. Ethernet keeps the PC off Wi-Fi while the headset uses wireless.
- Headset to router: Check that the headset is using an appropriate band for your app and hardware. Steam Link calls for 5 GHz and at least Wi-Fi 5 capability; 6 GHz is an option only when both headset and router support it.
- Local reachability: The PC and headset must be able to find and communicate with each other. Guest networks, client isolation, or managed public Wi-Fi can prevent that even if both devices have internet access.
- Signal in the play area: Distance, walls, floors, metal and nearby electronics can affect wireless signal. Test where you actually play, not only beside the router.
Compare the requirements for your app
| App | Published network guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Link | Steam’s current support guidance lists a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5 as minimum router capability for consumer headsets; Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E is recommended. Its Nov. 30, 2023 announcement says the router should be wired to the PC and the headset should use 5 GHz. | Connect the PC to the router by Ethernet where possible; verify headset band and router capability. The GTX 970, Windows 10-or-newer, and Quest 2/3/Pro details in the 2023 announcement concern that setup’s PC and device compatibility, not network readiness. Steam News announcement; Steam Link support |
| Virtual Desktop | Its computer requirements specify a wired computer-to-5 GHz AC or AX router connection. Its FAQ advises that the computer and headset use the same network and notes that some public apartment or office Wi-Fi prevents device-to-device communication. | Use Ethernet for the PC, connect the headset to the same home network, and check firewall or VPN settings if discovery fails. Virtual Desktop requirements and FAQ |
| Meta Air Link | The cited Meta guidance identifies network interference as one cause of late or dropped Air Link frames; it does not give a universal signal percentage or throughput minimum. | Check local signal and interference, but do not assume every stutter is a network problem. | Microsoft Mixed Reality Link | Microsoft recommends moving from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz or 6 GHz when troubleshooting its Quest 3 virtual display. For a wired PC and Wi-Fi headset, it says the devices should share a subnet. Its pixelation troubleshooting advises a signal reading of at least 75%. | Use the 75% figure only for that Microsoft troubleshooting context, not as a pass/fail threshold for other wireless VR apps. Check the headset’s band and the local connection
Confirm the headset is not on 2.4 GHz when a faster band is available
Look in the headset’s Wi-Fi details or your router’s device list to see which band it uses. For Steam Link, the published minimum is a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5 capability; Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E is recommended, not required. Microsoft’s Mixed Reality Link troubleshooting recommends moving to 5 GHz or 6 GHz from 2.4 GHz. The available band depends on the router and headset.
Make sure both devices can see each other
For Virtual Desktop, the FAQ says the computer and headset should be on the same network. Microsoft says Mixed Reality Link requires the wired PC and Wi-Fi headset to share a subnet. A guest network, client isolation, public apartment or office Wi-Fi, or a school or workplace network may block local discovery. Having internet access on both devices does not prove local device-to-device communication works.

Check the PC’s Wi-Fi signal only if it uses Wi-Fi
Microsoft documents this Windows check for signal and band information:
- Open Command Prompt on the PC.
- Run
netsh wlan show interfaces. - Read the
SignalandBandfields for the listed wireless interface.
This command reports the PC’s Wi-Fi interface; it does not directly inspect the headset’s Wi-Fi connection. Microsoft’s advice to seek at least 75% signal is for Mixed Reality Link pixelation troubleshooting, not a general wireless VR standard.

Test in the room where you play
Start near the router or access point, then test from your normal play space. Steam identifies distance, interference, walls, floors, metal and electronic devices as signal factors. A connection that works next to the router but degrades across the room points to placement or signal conditions worth addressing before replacing equipment.

- Connect the PC to the router or access point by Ethernet, if practical, and confirm that it is the same network the headset uses.
- Check the headset’s Wi-Fi band in its network settings or router app.
- Move closer to the access point and reduce obstructions or nearby sources of interference.
- Retry the streaming app and note whether discovery, connection stability or image smoothness changed.
Vendor guidance focuses on the local band, signal, wiring and reachability; an internet speed test does not test those conditions.
If the headset cannot find the PC or the stream stutters
Connection or discovery fails
Check that both devices are on the intended home network rather than a guest network. If the PC is wired and the headset is on Wi-Fi, verify the relevant app’s local-network or subnet requirements. Virtual Desktop’s FAQ identifies public apartment or office Wi-Fi, firewall settings and VPNs as possible connection issues. Check whether client isolation, a proxy, or a managed-network policy prevents local communication. Do not disable security software broadly; use app-specific firewall permissions where appropriate, or ask the network administrator to confirm whether local device communication is allowed.

The picture drops frames or looks unstable
Retest closer to the access point and check for interference or a band change. Meta says network interference can contribute to late or dropped Air Link frames. That does not establish that all stuttering is network-caused: PC rendering performance and application behavior can also contribute.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When new equipment is justified
Consider a change only after identifying a specific limitation. If the PC is using Wi-Fi, an Ethernet connection to the router is the first practical test for Steam Link or Virtual Desktop. If the router lacks the band or capability required by your app and headset, a compatible router may address that gap. Steam recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E, but its support guidance does not make either a universal requirement. The cited guidance does not establish one router model as best or promise a particular improvement from an upgrade.
