If a PS5 game looks blurry or washed out, first check whether the PS5 home screen and other games look the same. If only one game is affected, start with that game’s graphics and HDR settings. If the problem is widespread, verify the console’s reported video signal, HDR mode, display input, and HDMI connection. There is no single setting that fixes every TV and game.
First, find out whether it is one game or the whole PS5
Look at the PS5 home screen, then try another game. If the menus and several games also look soft or faded, check the console output and display connection below. If only one title looks wrong, inspect that game’s graphics or display options.
- Look for options such as Graphics, Quality, Performance, Resolution, or HDR in the affected game. Names and effects vary by title.
- Check the game’s own support information if its settings are unclear. Sony’s console video guides do not establish which rendering mode a particular game uses.
Check the PS5’s reported resolution
On the console, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and check Current Video Output Signal and the HDMI device information. Sony says the PS5 detects a TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution.
If the display is confirmed to support 4K but the reported output is lower, check that the TV is on the correct input and that the HDMI port and any equipment between the console and TV support the desired signal. You can set Resolution to 2160p when using a compatible 4K screen. Sony’s resolution and video-output guide explains the console settings.

#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
A 2160p output signal does not mean every game renders internally at native 4K. A game’s rendering resolution and upscaling depend on that title.
Compare HDR modes if the image looks faded, dim, or too bright
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR. Sony describes HDR as a wider contrast, color, and brightness range than SDR, but the result depends on the display and the content.

| PS5 HDR setting | What it does | When to compare it |
|---|---|---|
| On When Supported | HDR is used for supported content; unsupported games and apps remain in SDR. | Useful as a comparison when a non-HDR game or app looks wrong with HDR conversion enabled. |
| Always On | Converts even games and apps that do not support HDR to HDR output. | Compare the result with On When Supported; conversion may look different on your display. |
For supported HDR content, use Adjust HDR on the PS5 and follow the on-screen calibration steps, then compare the result in the game. Also check the TV’s picture mode and HDR controls for that input; their names and behavior vary by model. Sony’s HDR guide describes these settings. Avoid copying universal brightness values from another display.
Do not switch RGB Range as a general color fix
The PS5’s RGB Range setting is not a blanket cure for washed-out color. Sony advises changing it only when the HDMI device is not sending RGB range information correctly. First confirm the TV input and signal setup; if you have reason to suspect a range mismatch, check the display manual before changing the setting. An arbitrary Full/Limited change can make the picture worse.

Isolate the HDMI cable, port, and any equipment in between
A signal path problem can prevent the console from using the mode the display supports. Sony recommends the cable supplied with the console for high-performance features, though older HDMI cables can also be used. Work through these checks:
- Confirm the TV is set to the HDMI input connected to the PS5.
- Firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Try another HDMI cable and another TV port, if available.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor temporarily, bypassing a receiver, soundbar, capture device, or other intermediary.
- Check for display firmware updates and consult the display manual for input-specific high-resolution requirements.
Sony’s picture troubleshooting guide covers connection checks. A replacement cable is relevant when a cable or signal requirement is implicated; a different cable does not by itself sharpen a picture or correct color.

If 4K/120 Hz is the missing mode
For 4K at 120 Hz, check that the display supports that mode, the PS5 is connected to the appropriate high-bandwidth HDMI port, and the cable is rated for 4K/120 Hz. Sony names the cable included with the console or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. A receiver or other intermediary can also affect whether the mode is available. Support varies among displays, so check the model’s specifications and manual as well as the PS5’s reported signal.

Video Transfer Rate is a flicker troubleshooting control, not a blur or color adjustment. If the screen flickers, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate and try -1 or -2. These options limit some high-bandwidth 4K output formats; at -2, 4K 50/60 Hz uses YUV420. Check whether flickering stops and whether the resulting mode is acceptable. Sony documents this option in its video-output guide.
