To find Witcher contracts in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, check settlement notice boards, inspect notices that add a quest to your journal, and track the contract. Then speak to its issuer, investigate the clues with Witcher Senses, identify and prepare for the threat, finish every listed objective, and report back for payment. Notice boards are the main route, but some quests can begin when you meet the giver directly.

Where to find Witcher contracts

Look for notice boards in towns and villages, often near an inn or another public gathering place. Examine the posted notices: not every scrap of paper starts a quest, so check your journal to confirm that the contract was added. Notices bearing an official seal are the ones identified by Gamepressure’s notice-board guide as adding available quests and contracts.

Boards can also reveal nearby optional locations on the map, but checking one board does not expose every optional location in a large region. The same guide describes yellow boards as not yet checked and white boards as read; new notices may appear later, so revisit boards after story progress. You can also speak to a potential quest giver you encounter while exploring—reading a notice first is not always required.

How to complete a contract

  1. Activate and track it. Select the contract in the journal and follow its current objective. Read the entry for the named issuer, location, and any initial instructions.
  2. Talk to the issuer. The person who posted the contract can explain the threat and may have follow-up dialogue. A suggested level is a guide, not a guarantee of difficulty for every build or setting.
  3. Investigate the marked area. Use Witcher Senses to find highlighted clues. Depending on the quest, you may need to question witnesses, examine a scene, follow tracks or scents, read a document, or find an item before the monster encounter can proceed.
  4. Identify the threat and prepare. Check the in-game Bestiary once you know what you are facing, then choose suitable equipment and tactics. A technique that works against one creature may not work against another; some contracts also involve human enemies or a noncombat objective.
  5. Complete every remaining objective. Follow journal prompts for tasks such as setting a lure, retrieving an item, or speaking with someone after a fight. Do not assume that defeating the target alone closes the contract.
  6. Return to the issuer. When the objective directs you to report back, speak with the named giver to conclude the quest and collect the agreed reward.

Why contract investigations matter

A contract is often an investigation as well as a fight. Rushing straight to a monster marker can leave clues or quest steps unfinished. In GamesRadar’s Devil by the Well walkthrough, Geralt searches the abandoned village, finds a diary and bracelet, and uses the evidence to summon the noonwraith. The quest’s specific advice to use Yrden applies to that encounter; it is not a universal tactic for contracts.

#1 Best Overall
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition - Xbox Series X
  • Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
  • Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
  • Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.

The same pattern appears in the Jenny o’ the Woods example: witness accounts and footprints lead to a shallow grave and a letter before Geralt confronts the haunt at night. These steps show why it is worth following the journal and examining clues rather than treating the contract as a simple kill marker.

Three contract examples

Contract Where it begins Key steps Closeout
Devil by the Well White Orchard notice board Speak to Odolan; investigate the abandoned village with Witcher Senses; recover and read evidence; use the bracelet to summon the noonwraith. The cited walkthrough recommends Yrden for this specific fight. Defeat the noonwraith and report to Odolan.
Jenny o’ the Woods Midcopse notice board Talk to the ealdorman and townsfolk; follow the tracks to a grave; read the letter; reach the haunt at night. The cited walkthrough recommends Yrden and dodging its attacks. Return to the ealdorman after the fight.
Missing Brother The Inn at the Crossroads notice board Speak with Bruno; search the mine and reach its rear chamber; defeat the arachas. Return to Bruno.

These walkthroughs illustrate different quest steps rather than a universal contract script. The examples and their suggested levels—level 2 for Devil by the Well and level 10 for Jenny o’ the Woods—come from the cited guides, not a guarantee of difficulty for every player.

Base game and expansion scope

Contract lists may cover the base game, expansions, or both, so check which content a guide includes before treating it as a complete checklist. Bandai Namco’s official product page describes the Complete Edition as including the base game, Hearts of Stone, Blood and Wine, and additional content, with platform versions including PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Availability can vary by market and platform. No definitive total contract count across all editions and expansions is established here.
