Before preordering, compare the exact edition contents for your platform and region, confirm which seller’s bonus applies and how it will be delivered, and check when you’ll be charged and whether you can cancel. Rules vary by storefront, seller, region and local law. Digital downloads or preloads can affect refund eligibility; physical orders have shipping and return terms. Save the listing and confirmation.
How to compare game editions
Edition names such as “deluxe” or “ultimate” do not tell you what is included. Contents are specific to a game, platform and region, so compare the live listing from the publisher or storefront for the exact version you intend to buy. No particular game’s editions or bonuses are established here.

For each edition, check:
- Included content: Base game, expansions or a season pass, cosmetics, early access, soundtrack, artbook and physical collectibles. Note whether an item requires a separate download.
- Platform and entitlement: The platform and version, any upgrade rights, and whether content is an account entitlement, a download or a voucher. For a physical edition, check which items are actually in the box.
- Price against your priorities: Identify which extras you would use and whether you would pay for them separately. An edition is not automatically better value because it includes more items.
- Full checkout cost: Include taxes and shipping, and check when payment is collected.
Do not assume an edition’s contents or availability are the same across platforms, regions or sellers. The listing at checkout is the relevant offer.
How to check a preorder bonus
A bonus can depend on the qualifying edition, seller, region and preorder deadline. Check the offer page for the delivery method—such as an account entitlement, physical item or code—and whether a code is limited-stock. Do not assume every retailer has the same offer or that a bonus is included with every edition.

Delivery timing can depend on payment processing and preload. Nintendo of America says a download code, when a bonus is offered, becomes available only after payment is processed and the game has preloaded. Its eShop FAQ says payment and preload occur no sooner than seven days before release. See Nintendo Support’s Nintendo eShop Pre-Order and Pre-Load FAQ.
Also check what happens if you cancel. Under the UK PlayStation Store policy, an immediately accessible extra included with a preorder stops working after cancellation. A bonus code or item’s treatment may differ by seller and offer, so read the terms for that specific listing.
When you may be charged
Payment timing differs by storefront, payment method and whether the preorder is digital or physical. These examples are region-specific policies, not general rules for every seller:

Microsoft says an authorization failure may lead it to retry the current payment method twice before launch if no alternate method is available, then cancel the preorder. Nintendo lists insufficient funds or an expired card as possible reasons an eShop preorder is canceled. Keep payment details current and check that the order remains active.

Can you cancel a digital preorder and get a refund?
There is no single answer across platforms. Digital refund eligibility can turn on when you ordered, whether payment has been taken and whether the game’s main content has started downloading or streaming. Preload may count as a download. Check the seller’s current policy before placing the order, and do not treat these storefront examples as a universal legal right.
PlayStation Store in the UK
Under the UK policy, a digital preorder placed and paid for more than 14 days before release can be canceled for a refund before release, provided the main content has not started downloading or streaming. For a preorder paid 14 days or less before release, cancellation is available up to 14 days after payment, subject to the same condition. Starting the main download generally removes eligibility unless the product is faulty. Automatic Downloads can start the main download, so check that setting if you are relying on a cancellation window. Read the PlayStation Store cancellation policy for the UK.

PlayStation Store in Ireland
PlayStation’s Ireland support page says to request a refund before release for a preorder placed more than 14 days before release and not to download or preload the main content. For orders placed less than 14 days before release, it says to request before release or, after release, within 14 days from purchase, while keeping the main content undownloaded and not preloaded. The page says refunds may take 10 days and go to the original payment method where possible, otherwise to the wallet. See PlayStation’s Ireland refund instructions.
Microsoft Store and Xbox
Microsoft says a billed preorder canceled before release is processed as a refund, and payment details can be changed before billing. If the Microsoft Store no longer offers a Cancel option, the order may already be billed or shipped; an Xbox digital purchase may need a separate refund request. See Microsoft’s instructions to cancel a Microsoft Store order or preorder. Cancellation and a refund request are not necessarily the same step.

Nintendo of America says an eShop preorder can be canceled before payment is processed and preload begins, which occurs up to seven days before release under its FAQ. Its general US digital-products policy says payments through Nintendo Account services, including pre-purchases, are final and non-refundable except as authorized by Nintendo or required by applicable law. Read the preorder FAQ alongside Nintendo’s US digital-products refund policy; do not apply the US policy automatically to another country or to physical goods.

What changes with a physical preorder?
Physical orders involve shipping, dispatch and return terms as well as payment timing. The examples below apply to the named seller, not to retailers generally.
- Microsoft Store: Its preorder price guarantee applies only to physical items sold by Microsoft Store. A buyer is charged the lowest qualifying Microsoft Store price from preorder through public release. It excludes digital items, other sellers, tax, shipping and typographical errors. For payment timing, Microsoft says physical items paid with account funds are charged immediately; other payment methods are charged when the item ships. Read Microsoft’s preorder terms.
- Nintendo Store in the US: A physical pre-purchase is charged in full immediately and ships one to three business days after the release date. Nintendo says cancellation requires contacting support. This is distinct from an eShop preorder. See Nintendo Support’s physical and digital preorder details.
- PlayStation Direct: The UK PlayStation Store cancellation policy describes physical-order cancellation before an item enters shipping. Check the applicable Direct listing and local terms for your order. PlayStation Store cancellation policy (UK).
For any physical order, check the seller’s dispatch date, cancellation cutoff, return conditions and whether a bundle must be returned together. A digital-store refund rule does not establish the return terms for a boxed copy.
Preorder checklist before checkout
- Match the game, edition, platform and region to the listing you are buying.
- Read the included-content list and identify any vouchers, separate downloads or account entitlements.
- Confirm the bonus’s qualifying edition, seller, deadline and delivery method.
- Check the total price, shipping and tax, plus when your payment method will be charged.
- Read the cancellation and refund conditions, including the effect of preload, downloads or streaming.
- For physical products, check dispatch, shipping, returns and any seller-specific price guarantee.
- Save the offer page and order confirmation, and make sure the payment method will remain valid.
Policies can change, and local law may provide rights beyond a storefront’s terms. Verify the current listing and regional policy at checkout.
