Donaldson’s account is outside reporting, not confirmation from Square Enix. It does not establish that the company cancelled the game, nor does it confirm that development will resume. No release date, platforms, confirmed scope, reason for the reported pause, or return to active development is established by these sources.
Why “new FF9 release” can be misleading
TechRadar noted that the “new FF9 release” chatter discussed in February 2026 referred to a Vivi children’s storybook, not a new game. The outlet also traced remake speculation to a large NVIDIA leak; that leak is not an official Square Enix announcement.
