Choose Nintendo Switch 2 if you want to play handheld, tabletop, and on a TV, or you want Nintendo’s current console ecosystem. A used PlayStation 4 may suit you better if its games and the specific console you can buy locally are a better fit. Compare actual listings and condition: there is no established like-for-like price comparison that proves a used PS4 will cost less.

Choose Switch 2 for play beyond the living room
Switch 2 can be used as a handheld, set up on a surface for tabletop play, or connected to a TV through its dock. Its built-in display is a 7.9-inch LCD with 1920×1080 resolution, HDR10, and variable refresh rate support up to 120 Hz, according to Nintendo’s specifications. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a direct comparison with a particular PS4 display setup.
Nintendo estimates battery life at approximately 2–6.5 hours. The estimate depends on the game and use conditions, so it should not be treated as guaranteed play time for every title. If you mostly play near a power outlet or on a television, portability may matter less; if you want to take the console away from a TV, it is a major practical difference.

Choose a used PS4 when its games and listing make sense
A PS4 is a home console, so plan to connect it to a display. Its appeal may be the specific games you want or access to a PS4 library you already own. Check whether you own discs or digital games, and make sure the account and access arrangements for any digital library work for you.
Sony says PS4 games can be installed from disc, and the disc must remain inserted to play. Digital downloads are another option. Sony’s PS4 setup guide covers multiple PS4 model families, so do not assume a used listing’s storage, disc drive, or included hardware without checking the exact unit.

Check your existing games before deciding
If you own Nintendo Switch games
Nintendo Support says, “In addition to Nintendo Switch 2 games, Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released on the Nintendo Switch system.” The word “compatible” matters: Nintendo says some Switch games may be unsupported or only partly compatible. Look up each game you care about on Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility support page before counting it as part of your library.
If you own PS4 games
Check whether each game is a disc or digital purchase. A disc requires a working disc drive and must be inserted for play; digital games depend on access to the relevant account. If you are buying a used console to continue an existing library, confirm the exact games and access method before handing over money.

Include storage and online play in the decision
Switch 2 storage
Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage, with some space reserved for the system. For storage expansion, Nintendo specifies compatible microSD Express cards. Ordinary microSD cards can only be used to copy Nintendo Switch screenshots and videos, not as general Switch 2 game storage. See Nintendo’s specifications before buying a card.
PS4 online multiplayer
Sony says most PS4 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, but some games are exceptions. Verify the requirements for the particular game and the current subscription terms in your region using PlayStation Plus support. Sony also says PS4 titles will be added only intermittently to PlayStation Plus game lineups and catalog updates from January 2026; do not assume a particular game will be included. Check the PlayStation Plus service page for current catalog information.
Compare the real cost, not the category
A used PS4 is not automatically the cheaper choice. Its price depends on local supply, model, condition, seller, accessories, and return terms; Switch 2 pricing and bundle contents also vary by region. Compare what you would pay now, then factor in anything you need for the setup and the games you plan to play.
Quick Recap
- For a PS4 listing, confirm model, storage capacity, controller, power cable, and any other included hardware.
- If you want to play discs, ask the seller to demonstrate that the console powers on and reads one.
- Ask about testing and return terms before buying; these are practical checks, not a Sony warranty or certification.
- For Switch 2, account for any required microSD Express card separately if the internal storage is not enough for your plans.
- For online play, confirm whether your chosen games require a paid subscription and what the current regional terms are.
A quick decision rule
- Pick Switch 2 if handheld or tabletop play is important, you want a console that also connects to a TV, or you are choosing within Nintendo’s current ecosystem.
- Consider a used PS4 if the PS4 games you want are the deciding factor and a particular local console passes your checks at a price you consider worthwhile.
- Pause and verify if the decision depends on carrying over a game library, online access, or a low used-console price. Check compatibility, account access, subscription requirements, and the exact listing first.
