For light dust on an assembled LEGO set, use a clean, soft-bristled brush and gentle strokes, supporting delicate sections as you work. To reduce how much dust reaches the model, use a display case or cover that fits. If the pieces need washing, separate them first and follow LEGO’s hand-cleaning guidance; that guidance is for pieces, not a tested method for dusting a completed display.
Dust prevention: cover the model if the case fits
A fitted case or dust cover limits a model’s exposure to settled dust. LEGO describes its Play and Display Case as helping keep displayed models free from dust. That is a qualitative product claim: LEGO does not publish a percentage or comparative test showing how much dust it blocks.
The cited LEGO US case measures over 7.5 in (19 cm) high, 15.5 in (39 cm) wide, and 5.5 in (14 cm) deep; models are not included. Those dimensions make it unsuitable for some larger builds. Before choosing any case, check the model’s full dimensions, including projecting pieces, as well as shelf footprint, visibility, stability, and how easily you can access the set for play or maintenance.
Dusting an assembled set gently
LEGO’s cleaning instructions recommend a soft cloth or sponge for hand-cleaning pieces; they do not specifically endorse a brush technique for an assembled display. For routine, light dust on a completed model, a clean, soft-bristled brush is a cautious practical option, not a manufacturer-tested method.

- Set the model on a stable surface where you can reach it without pulling on fragile sections.
- Use a clean brush with soft bristles. Sweep lightly rather than pressing or scrubbing, and work dust out of detailed areas a little at a time.
- Support delicate or projecting sections with your free hand if needed. Do not force the brush into tight gaps or move parts that feel loose.
- If dust is trapped somewhere you cannot reach without stressing the build, consider carefully separating the relevant pieces for cleaning rather than applying more pressure.
The sources do not establish an ideal dusting schedule or compare brushes, cloths, and other tools for assembled models. Dust the set when visible accumulation warrants it, using a technique suited to its fragility.
When to wash LEGO pieces instead
If a set is genuinely dirty rather than simply dusty, and its parts can be separated safely, LEGO recommends hand-cleaning the pieces. Its cleaning guidance says to use water no hotter than 104°F (40°C) and a soft cloth or sponge. Mild detergent may be added, followed by a thorough rinse with clear water. LEGO Education’s hygiene guidance also says to take elements apart before cleaning them; this applies to cleaning elements, not necessarily to routine dusting of a completed model.

- Keep electronic or metal-containing sensitive parts to a damp cloth and mild detergent without perfume or oil.
- Do not put pieces in a dishwasher or washing machine.
- Do not dry pieces in an oven, microwave, or hair dryer, and do not leave them in direct sunlight to dry. LEGO warns that excess heat can change brick shape.
Follow the piece-cleaning instructions only for parts that can be safely separated and cleaned; they are not a recommendation to wash an assembled model.

For a case, weigh fit, ease of access, visibility, and shelf space against price, and check whether the model is included. For a brush, consider bristle softness and reach into details, but the cited sources do not test or rank dusting tools for assembled LEGO displays.
