Use Most Played to see which games have the largest visible player populations when you check. Use Top Sellers to see which games are generating the most recent spending on Steam—not which games sold the most copies.
What Steam’s two lists measure
Most Played: visible current activity
Steam’s Charts page labels this list “MOST PLAYED” and shows an “IN GAME” count beside the leading entry. It is the more relevant starting point if you want a quick view of games with substantial player activity at that moment. Steam’s public chart page does not fully explain its technical sampling and counting rules, so the list should not be treated as a precise count of unique players, daily users, or long-term popularity.

Top Sellers: revenue, not unit sales
Steam labels its global Top Sellers list as games ranked “by revenue.” Valve’s Steamworks documentation says the ranking includes all revenue sources for a game, including its base game, downloadable content (DLC), and in-game transactions. For the live chart, Steam rolls up spending over the trailing 24 hours and gives extra weight to spending in the last 3 hours.
That method makes Top Sellers a signal of recent revenue, not copies sold or concurrent players. A game can rank highly because of spending on an expensive edition, DLC, or in-game items. Free-to-play games can also appear because players may spend money on their additional content.

Which list should you use?
| Your question | Start with | What the list helps show | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Which games have a lot of people playing right now? | Most Played | Visible current activity, including an in-game count beside the leading entry. | Whether a game is right for you, its longer-term unique-player total, or whether its popularity will last. |
| Which games are people spending money on right now? | Top Sellers | Recent revenue from base games, DLC, and in-game transactions. | Copies sold, concurrent players, or value for money. |
| What has been selling over a longer period? | Weekly Top Sellers or Steam’s dated weekly chart history | A longer timeframe than the live charts. | Why a game reached its rank or whether players are satisfied with it. |
| What should I personally buy or play? | Either list as a discovery starting point, then the individual game’s store page | Games attracting activity or spending across Steam. | Personal compatibility, accessibility, performance on your hardware, or review context. |
Live, weekly, and other chart views are different
Steam’s Charts page offers live charts, weekly charts, monthly top releases, and year-end summaries. A live snapshot and a weekly list cover different periods, so their ranks are not directly comparable as if they measured the same window. Steamworks describes the live Top Sellers calculation; that methodology should not be assumed to apply to every other chart or timeframe.
Why your Steam chart may differ from someone else’s
- Country or global view: Steamworks says the default storefront is territory-specific and that country-specific charts are generated for some popular countries. You can switch to a global view or another country’s view.
- Store preferences: Steamworks says charts can reflect content preferences and filters for categories, games you already own, and free-to-play games. Those settings can change what appears in your list.
- DLC spending: Spending on a game’s DLC contributes to the game’s Top Sellers rank. Steamworks explains that existing owners may see the DLC itself, while people who do not own the base game see the base game.
How to use either list to find a game
- Choose the signal you care about. Open Most Played for visible current activity, or Top Sellers for recent revenue.
- Check the timeframe and scope. Confirm whether you are viewing a live, weekly, or other chart and whether it is country-specific or global.
- Open the game’s store page before deciding. Check its reviews, tags, system requirements, and play-style details against what you want and the hardware you use.
A high rank is not a quality score or a personalized recommendation. Valve describes Top Sellers as one of several ways players might discover content; the chart is a broad store signal, not a verdict on whether a game is good, welcoming to newcomers, or suitable for you.
