Google’s Steam for Chromebook Beta ended on January 1, 2026. Google’s notice says games installed through the beta are no longer available to play on the Chromebook after that date. It does not say that purchases were deleted from users’ Steam accounts.
What changed on January 1, 2026?
The cutoff applies to playing on a Chromebook the games installed as part of Google’s dedicated Steam beta. It is not a notice that users’ Steam accounts or purchases were erased. Google’s notice does not explain a way to keep playing those beta-installed games locally after the cutoff.
The beta was a ChromeOS feature developed in collaboration with Valve, not a general promise that Steam would run on every Chromebook. Google announced its beta on November 2, 2022, alongside ChromeOS 108. In the announcement, ChromeOS Product Manager Zach Alcorn described it as offering “broader availability, an improved user experience, and better performance and compatibility for more of your favorite games.” Google’s beta announcement
Why only some Chromebooks could use the beta
Google’s historical minimums were an Intel i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Those specifications alone did not guarantee eligibility: Google maintained a specific supported-device list, and the installer appeared only on devices that met its beta requirements. The beta also had limitations, known bugs and performance issues. Google’s compatible-games list described titles that had performed well on qualifying Chromebooks; it was not a guarantee that every listed title would work equally well on every supported model. Its troubleshooting advice included lowering in-game resolution and graphics settings and closing background apps.
What can Chromebook owners use instead?
Android games and cloud game streaming are separate routes to gaming on a Chromebook. Neither should be treated as a replacement library for the former Steam beta: check that the exact game is available through the Android store or the cloud provider’s current catalog.

Local installation depends on device capability and available storage; streaming depends on service access and a suitable internet connection. Google’s former instructions cautioned against installing Steam or Steam Link from the Play Store because they could cause performance issues. No. Buying a Chromebook that meets the beta’s former hardware minimums does not restore a discontinued feature. When comparing devices for Android games or streaming, assess the requirements of the particular game or service rather than treating Google’s historical Steam-beta specifications as current guidance.
