Use NHL.com’s official goalie statistics: select the season and game type, find the goalie, and follow games started (GS), time on ice (TOI), and shots against (SA) alongside saves and goals allowed. The season totals show cumulative usage; the By Game view shows how that workload built up.
Choose the right season and game type
- Open the NHL goalie statistics page.
- Set the season and game type to match what you want to track. The page is live and may default to a different season than the one you need; its current-season selection showed 2026-27 when reviewed, so check the selector rather than assuming it is correct.
- Search for the goalie by name and use the season summary for cumulative totals.
NHL statistics can also be reviewed historically by one season, multiple seasons, or game by game, as explained in the NHL’s guide to reading statistics.
Which statistics to record
| Question | Fields to follow | What they show |
|---|---|---|
| How often did the goalie play? | GP and GS | Games played (GP) counts appearances; games started (GS) counts starts. Keep them separate: a goalie can appear without starting. |
| How much was the goalie used? | GS and TOI | Starts and time on ice (TOI) help describe usage over the selected period. |
| How much shot volume did the goalie face? | SA and saves | Shots against (SA) gives context for the number of saves. |
| What were the results? | GA, Sv%, and GAA | Goals against (GA) records goals allowed; save percentage (Sv%) and goals-against average (GAA) provide season-level performance summaries. |
These are complementary measures, not a single workload or performance score. A goalie’s saves are more informative when read with shots against and goals allowed; starts, TOI, and shots against help describe usage and volume. The NHL table presents these fields, but they do not establish that workload caused a particular performance result.
Use the By Game view to build the season picture
Season totals answer how much a goalie has played across the selected season. To see the sequence behind those totals, switch to the page’s By Game view and record each appearance. A dated spreadsheet or note can preserve a running record; this is a personal logging method, not a separate NHL tracking feature.

- For each game, record the date or game, result, SA, saves, GA, and TOI.
- Update the season totals after games, keeping GP and GS in separate columns.
- When comparing stretches, use the same kind of window for each goalie—for example, the same number of games or the full season. NHL’s statistics can be examined for individual seasons, multiple seasons, or game by game.
Refresh the live NHL page after games: totals and rankings can change as the season progresses. Incomplete games can involve more than one goalie, another reason an appearance count and a start count may differ.
Compare goalies without confusing usage and results
Compare on distinct axes rather than relying on wins or one headline figure:
Rank #2
- Usage: GS, GP, and TOI.
- Workload volume: SA and saves.
- Results: Sv%, GAA, and GA.
- Time window: one game, a selected span, or the full season.
Make sure both goalies are being compared for the same season, game type, and time window. This is a practical comparison framework, not an official NHL rating system. More starts or shots faced indicates greater recorded usage or volume; it does not, by itself, prove fatigue or explain why a result changed.

The official statistics establish recorded appearances, starts, time on ice, shot volume, and results. They support tracking what a goalie has done, including looking back at game-level history. A recorded start is not a forecast of who will start next, and these statistics alone are not a medical assessment of fatigue or a fantasy projection.
