Why the setup suits this formation
The 4-3-3 (4), also called Option 4 in EA’s formation guide, places a CAM behind the striker with two wide attackers. That creates a central layer to support the striker and gives the front four potential scoring roles. EA describes Option 4 as attack-focused, while warning that the wide forwards are not strong defensively and the two CMs need to cover the spaces they leave. In this preset, both CMs and fullbacks stay back while the CAM and front three advance. That divides the work clearly: the midfield pair provide central cover, the fullbacks avoid leaving the flanks exposed, and the attacking quartet make forward runs. EA’s older formation guidance suggests pace and crossing ability for the wingers and aerial strength for the striker as role fits—not mandatory card requirements.
What to adjust if the preset does not fit
If opponents are countering through the flanks
Keep both fullbacks on Stay Back While Attacking and both CMs on Stay Back While Attacking with Cover Center. This preserves the preset’s conservative cover behind the forward runs. Releasing one fullback or CM can add attacking support, but also opens space for transitions; make that change only if the extra support is worth the risk for your squad.

If you want more direct runs
Long Ball works with Get In Behind instructions by encouraging forward movement into space. It can also favor a direct pass toward a target player and bypass midfield, so it may not suit a patient, short-passing approach. If the high line leaves space behind
A higher defensive depth pushes the team up to pressure opponents but gives fast attackers and long balls more room behind the line. The recommended depth here is 50; if your defenders cannot recover reliably, consider a more cautious defensive height rather than treating one setting as mandatory. This is a practical adjustment based on the described mechanics, not a tested alternative preset.

If you need more central support
An attacking width of 40 concentrates the shape more centrally than a wider setup, which can support combinations around the CAM but concedes some space out wide. If opponents are finding room on the wings or your attacks need wider outlets, adjust width to suit the way you build attacks. FIFAUTeam cautions that tactics should match your play style, experience and squad rather than being treated as a perfect configuration.

The preset depends on distinct jobs: the CMs must help protect the center, the wide attackers need to threaten forward space, and the CAM should support the striker.
