“Best-of” tells you the most games a postseason series can last—not how many games must be played. The first team to reach a majority of the possible wins advances: two wins in a best-of-three, three in a best-of-five, and four in a best-of-seven. In MLB’s 2026 format, those series are used in the Wild Card Series, Division Series, and League Championship Series and World Series, respectively.
How a best-of series works
A team wins a series as soon as it has more wins than its opponent can still possibly reach. The games remaining after that point are not played. So a best-of-five can finish in three or four games, and a best-of-seven can finish in four, five, or six.

Which format MLB uses in each round
As of MLB’s 2026 format explainer, 12 teams qualify—six from each league: three division winners and three Wild Cards. The postseason proceeds through four rounds:

- Wild Card Series: Best-of-three. The No. 3 seed plays No. 6, and No. 4 plays No. 5 in each league. Winners advance; losers are eliminated.
- Division Series: Best-of-five. The top two division winners in each league receive byes into this round. The No. 1 seed faces the winner of the 4/5 series, and No. 2 faces the winner of 3/6. The bracket is not reseeded.
- League Championship Series: Best-of-seven. The Division Series winners in each league meet for the league pennant.
- World Series: Best-of-seven. The American League and National League champions meet, and the first to four wins takes the championship.
The top two division winners’ byes mean they skip the Wild Card round, not the Division Series. In all rounds, reaching the required number of wins is what advances a team. MLB’s format explainer gives the current bracket and rules.
Where teams play their games
Home-field advantage does not follow one identical pattern throughout October. The hosting arrangement depends on the round:

- Wild Card Series: The higher seed hosts every game.
- Division Series: The higher seed hosts Games 1 and 2, then Game 5 if needed. This is the 2-2-1 pattern.
- League Championship Series: The higher remaining seed hosts Games 1 and 2, plus Games 6 and 7 if needed.
- World Series: Home field goes to the pennant winner with the better regular-season record.
Why older postseason descriptions may differ
MLB’s current format should not be assumed for earlier seasons. The league’s Wild Card history records several changes: the first Wild Card season was 1995; a one-game Wild Card playoff began in 2012; and in 2022 MLB added a third Wild Card team per league and replaced the single-game round with a best-of-three Wild Card Series. The 2020 postseason had a separate expanded, pandemic-era best-of-three opening round; the regular format returned in 2021. MLB’s Wild Card history provides that timeline.
