“Probable,” “questionable,” and “out” are availability labels, not universal NCAA football definitions. Their meaning depends on the conference or playoff policy and on whether the report is a midweek or game-day update. A label does not reveal a player’s diagnosis, and availability reports may include reasons other than injury.
What does probable mean in college football?
It depends on the governing report. In the Southeastern Conference’s 2025–26 football regulations, “Probable” is a pregame designation for a 75% chance to play. The ACC’s 2025 policy also defines “Probable” as likely to play (75%). The Big 12’s football reporting page presents the same percentage for its pregame category. These are policy definitions—not guarantees, measured rates, or NCAA-wide odds. SEC 2025–26 football regulations; ACC availability policy; Big 12 availability policy.
What does questionable mean?
In the SEC’s 2025–26 pregame definitions, “Questionable” means a 50% chance to play; the ACC uses “uncertain (50%),” and the Big 12 lists the same percentage for its pregame category. A player’s status may change as the game approaches, so check the official report and its update time rather than treating a midweek designation as a final decision.
What do doubtful and out mean?
The SEC’s 2025–26 regulations define pregame “Doubtful” as a 25% chance to play and “Out” as a 0% chance. The ACC describes “Doubtful” as unlikely to play (25%) and “Out” as will not play. The Big 12 presents the same percentages for its named pregame categories. Those definitions apply to the cited policies; they should not be carried over automatically to another conference or competition.

The SEC also sets a minimum category for initial reports: “If a student-athlete has any chance to play in a scheduled contest, he/she shall not be listed as Out and, at a minimum, must be listed as Doubtful on an initial report.” That rule is from the SEC’s 2025–26 commissioner regulations and specifically concerns an initial report. Why does the report say availability instead of explaining an injury?
“Injury status” is common shorthand, but the official documents call these availability reports. A designation states expected participation, not a diagnosis or injury severity. The SEC says a player can be reportable for injury, illness, suspension, ineligibility, or personal matters; the ACC says its policy is intended in part to protect sensitive information. Do not infer a medical explanation from a status alone. SEC 2025–26 football regulations; ACC availability policy.

Can game-day labels differ from midweek labels?
Yes. Reports can use a different vocabulary on game day, so compare labels within the same policy and reporting period.

When are reports published, and when is the final update?
Deadlines depend on the competition. Under the Big Ten’s 2026 policy, reports are due three, two, and one days before a conference game, followed by a game-day report two hours before kickoff. For the 2025–26 College Football Playoff, the CFP describes daily updates beginning three days before each game and a final report 90 minutes before game time. The Big 12 says reports begin three days before conference games, are posted at 9 p.m. CT, and have a final report 90 minutes before kickoff. The cited policies do not establish one universal NCAA-wide football injury report or a single key for these labels. The Big Ten, ACC, SEC, and Big 12 policies cover their specified conference games; the CFP policy covers playoff games. To interpret a listing, first identify the competition and policy, then check whether it is a midweek or game-day report, the policy’s label definitions, how it treats unlisted players, and the report’s last update time.

The NCAA’s March 2026 announcement concerns a pilot availability-reporting program for the 2026 Division I men’s and women’s basketball championships. It says the program will not be implemented for other NCAA championships in 2025–26, so it is not evidence of a universal football policy. NCAA announcement, March 4, 2026.
