The new Fable looks like a reboot in spirit and structure: a fresh story in Albion, British fairytale humor, choices that affect people around you, and combat built around switching between melee, ranged weapons and magic. Published hands-on previews have found promise in the combat and world systems, but their short, curated sessions cannot tell us whether those ideas stay compelling across a full campaign.
What is the new Fable reboot?
Fable is an open-world action RPG from Playground Games and Xbox Game Studios. Xbox describes it as a reboot and a “new beginning,” not a sequel that must fit the original trilogy’s timeline. Game Director Ralph Fulton said the team wanted room to build its own Albion and tell a new story; that describes the developers’ intent, rather than guaranteeing how every returning fan will respond. Xbox Wire’s January 2026 interview with Fulton explains that approach.

The announced premise begins with the hero as a child, when their powers emerge. Following a time jump, the adult protagonist returns to Briar Hill and finds that a mysterious stranger has turned their grandmother and others to stone. That mystery is a starting thread, not the only announced way to spend time: Fulton said players can explore broadly after leaving the village, with activities across settlements rather than a progression path that requires one strict order. The official description also points to a customizable hero, reputation, social and economic activities, and choices that affect relationships with villagers and the wider world. Xbox’s Fable page has the current product description.
What do the hands-on previews say about playing it?
The available coverage comes from separate events and slices, so it is more useful to compare what each preview showed than to treat them as competing verdicts on the finished game.

Combat: fluid combinations, with questions still open
At Gamescom 2026, Jennifer Young of Windows Central reported that moving between melee, ranged attacks and magic felt intuitive and fluid. Her session included a hammer, crossbow, lightning and a spell that turns enemies into chickens. She enjoyed the combat, while noting that the important unanswered question is whether the loop remains fresh over a full campaign. Read the Windows Central Gamescom hands-on preview.
A separate GamesRadar+ Gamescom combat preview also found potential in combining weapons and spells, but its writer reported occasional trouble firing the crossbow and frustration with automatic enemy lock-on in that build. Those are observations from that session, not proof of defects in the final release. Read GamesRadar+’s combat preview.

World and social systems: visible, but not yet fully explained
Xbox’s Gamescom presentation showed an 18-minute quest through Bowerstone and described being able to enter every building and buy every house. That gives a glimpse of exploration and economic activity, but a presented quest cannot establish how much of the full game works that way. Xbox Wire’s Gamescom gameplay post includes the quest presentation.
Rob Dwiar’s Summer Game Fest preview for TechRadar focused on reputation and how a player’s actions could affect townspeople and local life. He also wanted more information about builds, skills and how combat depth would compare with the other systems shown. The slice was brief, so it revealed the intended interplay of systems more clearly than their depth. Read TechRadar’s preview.

What can we conclude—and what remains unknown?
The early picture is encouraging but bounded: the reboot has a recognizable Fable mix of whimsical British fantasy, player choice and social consequence, while its combat aims for fluid movement among three attack styles. Preview coverage has shown some breadth in exploration, reputation and economic activity. It has not established whether combat variety holds over a long campaign, how deep character builds and skills are, or how the full story is paced.
These sessions also do not establish total campaign content, performance across platforms or final balance. A short demo can show how a system feels in a particular encounter; it cannot prove how that system develops over dozens of hours. The most defensible judgment so far is that the reboot’s core ideas are legible and promising, while the depth and staying power that determine the finished game remain untested by the published slices.
