Is the GTX 1060 VR-Ready? Requirements, Limits, and 2016 Price Context

The GTX 1060 appears in NVIDIA’s legacy VR requirements and SteamVR’s recommended GPU list. Here’s what that means for a complete PC—and why its $249 launch MSRP says nothing about today’s price.

Yes: NVIDIA includes the GTX 1060 in its GeForce GTX VR Ready performance list, and both NVIDIA’s legacy desktop requirements and Steam’s SteamVR listing name it as a recommended GPU. That is a scoped recommendation—not a guarantee that every PC, headset, or VR game will run well. The “affordable” part needs a date: NVIDIA announced a $249 starting MSRP in July 2016, which does not establish today’s used-card price or availability.

What “VR-ready” means for the GTX 1060

NVIDIA’s GeForce VR page includes the GTX 1060 among the GeForce GTX GPUs that meet its VR Ready performance requirements. NVIDIA’s legacy desktop requirements likewise specify a GTX 1060 or greater. This makes the card a historically recognized entry point for VR under those recommendations, not a certification of every complete computer or application.

Valve’s SteamVR store requirements list the GTX 1060 as a recommended graphics card, with a GTX 970 or equivalent as the minimum GPU. The distinction matters: meeting a stated minimum is not the same as meeting a recommendation, and neither label promises a particular experience across all titles.

Check the whole PC and the exact headset

NVIDIA’s legacy desktop requirements pair the GTX 1060 recommendation with other system specifications. A graphics-card match alone does not establish that a PC is ready.

NVIDIA’s legacy requirements name a higher GPU threshold for HTC Vive Pro: GTX 1070 or greater. Check the current requirements published for the particular headset before relying on an older general recommendation. Steam Support also notes that requirements vary by Windows Mixed Reality headset and Steam app; lower specifications can affect performance or visual quality. See Steam Support’s Windows Mixed Reality and SteamVR guidance.

Is the GTX 1060 affordable?

Only a dated price claim is supported here. NVIDIA’s July 7, 2016 launch announcement said custom boards would start at $249. That was a launch starting MSRP, not a current price. It cannot show what a used or remaining-stock card costs now, or whether one is available; compare current listings and condition before deciding whether a particular card is a bargain.

  1. Identify the headset. Read its current vendor requirements, including any model-specific GPU threshold.
  2. Check the intended games and apps. Steam’s recommended GPU is a platform-level reference; individual applications can impose different demands.
  3. Verify the complete PC. Compare the processor, RAM, required video output, and USB ports as well as the graphics card.
  4. Inspect the actual card and system fit. Confirm memory capacity, condition, physical clearance, and power compatibility for the specific card and PC.
  5. Compare the current price with alternatives. The 2016 MSRP is historical context, not a present-day value benchmark.

The cited official requirements establish GTX 1060 recognition in NVIDIA’s legacy VR guidance and SteamVR’s recommended-GPU list; they do not establish a modern cross-GPU ranking or current market value. For a purchase, the exact headset, applications, full system, and present listing all matter.
