The NHL is hockey’s top league; the AHL is the top development league for players and staff across all 32 NHL organizations. They are closely connected through player assignments, but the AHL has its own roster-development requirements, eligibility rules, overtime formats, playoffs, and season-specific rule changes. The leagues are not simply identical competitions at different levels.

What is the difference between the AHL and NHL?

The National Hockey League (NHL) is the sport’s premier professional competition. The American Hockey League (AHL) is a separate professional league that serves as the top development league for the NHL. NHL organizations use AHL clubs to develop players and staff, and NHL-contracted players can be assigned to their organizations’ AHL clubs.

The connection is substantial, but an AHL player’s route varies: some players are on NHL contracts, while others sign AHL contracts or professional or amateur tryouts. An AHL contract is not the same thing as an NHL contract, and the two leagues’ roster provisions should not be conflated.

How does the AHL develop NHL players?

The AHL gives players a professional setting to continue developing, gain experience, and potentially earn opportunities with an NHL club. The AHL reported that 87.0 percent of NHL players were AHL graduates in the 2024–25 season. That is a league-published figure, not an independent estimate of the AHL’s causal effect; it also does not mean every player followed the same path or spent the same length of time in the league. An AHL lineup rule designed around development

For 2026–27, an AHL team must have at least 12 development players among its 18 dressed skaters. The basic threshold defines a development player as someone with no more than 260 professional games across the NHL, AHL, and elite European leagues. Under the season’s stated exception, a team may dress up to six skaters who are age 25 or older by July 1 and have exceeded 260 games. Goalies do not count toward this requirement. It is an AHL lineup-development policy, not an NHL roster-size rule. Source: AHL, 2026.

AHL age eligibility and rookie status

A player must be 18 on or before September 15 to be eligible for the AHL. Rookie status is a separate label with thresholds based on previous professional and European elite-league appearances, as well as age. The AHL FAQ says a player is not a rookie if they had 25 or more AHL/NHL regular-season games in any preceding season, six or more in each of any two preceding seasons, or 100 European Elite League regular-season games; players who are at least 26 by September 15 are also excluded. The applicable by-law and season matter when determining an individual player’s status. Source: AHL FAQ.

Do the AHL and NHL use the same rules?

Both are professional ice hockey leagues, but it is not safe to assume that a rule in one applies unchanged in the other. The currently documented AHL rules include league-specific overtime and lineup provisions, and the AHL updates rules by season. The available NHL rules material does not establish a current, detailed 2026–27 comparison of roster management or these specific rules, so an exact claim that an NHL rule is the same or different would require checking the NHL’s applicable rules edition.

AHL regular-season and playoff overtime

  • Regular season: A game tied after regulation goes to five minutes of 3-on-3 overtime. If the game remains tied, a shootout follows, with three attempts per team and sudden death if needed.
  • Calder Cup playoffs: Tied games continue with full-strength, 20-minute overtime periods until a goal is scored.

These are AHL formats; they should not be presented as a direct NHL comparison without confirming the current NHL rule. Source: AHL FAQ.

2026–27 AHL video-review changes

Starting in 2026–27, an offside play leading to a goal may be reviewed only after a coach’s challenge. A first failed challenge results in a bench minor for delay of game; additional failed challenges in that game result in double minors. The AHL also allows a goal to be awarded on a continuous play unaffected by a whistle when a referee had lost sight of the puck. These changes were announced by the AHL on September 18, 2026, and are not evidence of an NHL rule. Source: AHL, September 18, 2026.

How are AHL teams and seasons organized?

The AHL is a competition in its own right, with its own regular season and Calder Cup postseason. For 2025–26, the AHL reported 32 clubs, each scheduled to play 72 regular-season games, and 23 teams qualifying for the Calder Cup Playoffs. Those figures describe the AHL season, not an apples-to-apples comparison with the NHL postseason. Source: AHL, 2025.

The AHL and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association announced a five-year collective bargaining agreement effective through August 31, 2030. The agreement governs the AHL–PHPA relationship; it should not be confused with NHL player-contract rules. Source: AHL, January 21, 2026.

Can junior hockey players move directly to the AHL?

The route from major junior hockey to the AHL has been subject to eligibility restrictions. NHL.com reported on March 17, 2026, that the NHL, CHL, and NHLPA were developing a change intended to allow at least one, and potentially more, 19-year-old CHL players per NHL team to play in the AHL the following season. At the time of that report, the change was still being drafted; it should not be treated as an adopted rule without confirmation of the final agreement. Source: NHL.com, March 17, 2026.
