To fix low FPS or stuttering in a 2D PC game, first work out whether the game is consistently slow or only delivers occasional uneven frames. Record performance in the same scene, then change one setting at a time. A 2D game can still be limited by CPU work, graphics processing, display synchronization, or the way frames are presented; there is no universal setting that fixes every title.
Why is my 2D game stuttering?
Low FPS and stuttering are related, but they are not the same symptom. Sustained low FPS means the game is not producing frames quickly enough. Stuttering is an irregular delay between frames or their presentation, and can happen even when an FPS counter looks high. Note whether the problem is constant, appears in particular scenes, or feels uneven despite a high counter.
Before changing settings, write down the game, Windows version, CPU and GPU, laptop or desktop, display resolution and refresh rate, the game’s graphics API and display mode if known, recent driver or game updates, and when the issue began. Use a repeatable gameplay segment for comparisons and change only one setting at a time.
How do I measure low FPS and frame drops?
A counter showing average FPS alone may miss brief slowdowns. NVIDIA FrameView 1.7 documentation describes capturing average FPS, 1% lows, frame times and presentation metrics, as well as CPU/GPU utilization, clocks and temperatures. The tool supports multiple GPU vendors and graphics APIs on Windows 10 and later. These are documented capabilities, not a diagnosis of your PC or an independent validation of the tool. Compare the same scene before and after a change. If possible, note whether frame times worsen at the same moment as a change in utilization, clocks or temperature. Measurements help narrow the investigation; they do not by themselves prove a component is faulty.
Is the game limited by the CPU or GPU?
Do not assume a 2D game is automatically easy to run. A game’s CPU work can include tasks such as AI, physics, collision detection and preparing work for the GPU. Microsoft notes that many Windows titles can be CPU-limited even on systems with powerful graphics cards. GPU limits can also arise from high-resolution fill rate or shader demand. If the game has resolution or graphics-effect controls, lower one setting briefly and replay the same scene. A clear improvement is consistent with GPU pressure, but is not conclusive. No improvement does not prove the CPU is the cause; other limits may be involved.
Check which graphics processor the game uses
On a Windows 11 PC with hybrid graphics or more than one GPU, make sure the game is assigned the intended processor. Windows offers Power saving and High performance choices where applicable; the labels indicate a preference, not a guarantee that one option is always best for every game or battery situation.

- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the game. If it is not listed, add its executable using the available browse option.
- Open the game’s options, choose the appropriate graphics preference if offered, and save.
- Restart the game and compare the same gameplay segment.

Test Windows 11 windowed-game optimizations when they apply
For compatible DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless, Windows 11 offers Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft says the feature can move compatible games from legacy blt presentation to flip model, reducing frame latency and enabling features such as variable refresh rate on supported displays. - Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Open Default settings and find Optimizations for windowed games.
- Turn the setting on or off for a comparison, then restart the game.
- Test the same scene in the same windowed or borderless mode. Keep the change only if it improves the result.
Compare V-Sync, adaptive sync and frame caps
If the issue is uneven frame delivery or input delay, compare synchronization and frame-cap options rather than assuming one combination is best. V-Sync, adaptive sync and a cap can affect tearing, responsiveness and frame pacing differently depending on the game, monitor, driver and hardware.
- V-Sync: Compare the game’s enabled and disabled settings. Disabling it may change input response, but can introduce visible tearing.
- Adaptive sync: If your monitor and setup support it, test the supported adaptive-sync path. It is not available to every display or game.
- Frame cap: Compare a cap just below the monitor’s refresh rate with a much higher frame rate, as Intel suggests for investigating input lag. Keep the setting that works better for your setup, or restore the original if it feels worse.
Intel’s recommendations focus on input lag, not a guaranteed cure for stuttering. Intel also notes that input lag depends on the specific hardware and software configuration and can occur in offline, single-player games as well as multiplayer ones. Does your display support variable refresh rate?
Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a compatible display adjust its refresh rate to the game’s frame rate. It requires a VRR-capable monitor and suitable drivers. Microsoft’s Windows VRR setting can add support for some DirectX 11 fullscreen games that do not support VRR natively; it is not a universal setting for all games or modes. Check your display and driver documentation before testing VRR. Windows 11 windowed-game optimizations have separate requirements: compatible DirectX 10 or 11 games in windowed or borderless mode. A VRR display is a possible future upgrade only if your current display lacks the feature and your game and PC can use it; a monitor purchase is not a substitute for diagnosing the current problem.
Should you use Automatic Super Resolution?
Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) is an optional, constrained feature, not a general low-FPS fix. It is limited to eligible devices and games, generally applies to games rendering below 1080p, and can make fine text or UI look worse at lower render resolutions. Results and interactions with a game’s own scaling vary. Check Microsoft’s current device and game eligibility before trying it; if supported, compare image quality and performance, and turn it off if the result is unacceptable. What if the problem started after an update?
Record the game, Windows and graphics-driver versions and the date the issue began. If it followed an update, check the game’s official support information and the driver’s documented rollback options before attempting broad driver cleanup. The available platform guidance does not establish a universally correct driver version or a clean-install procedure for every PC.

- One game is affected: Start with that game’s official support and compatibility information, then test its settings and display modes.
- Several games are affected: Investigate shared factors systematically, such as GPU selection, power mode, thermals or background workloads. Treat these as possibilities to check, not established causes.
Microsoft’s developer guidance discusses how CPU-side draw-batch submissions can become a driver-processing bottleneck, with a recommendation of approximately 300 or fewer per frame on current-generation hardware and fewer on lower-performance CPUs.
