Match that information against your fantasy platform’s lineup lock and status rules before deciding whether to start the player.
What the NFL injury report tells you
NFL reporting has two distinct parts. The practice report describes participation; the Game Status Report states the club’s availability designation. The NFL’s Competition Committee policy defines practice participation as Did Not Participate, Limited Participation, or Full Participation. Limited means less than 100 percent of normal repetitions; Full means 100 percent. These labels describe practice work, not whether a player is cleared or guaranteed to play.
The Game Status Report uses Questionable, Doubtful, and Out. Under the same NFL policy, “Questionable means it is uncertain as to whether the player will play in the game; Doubtful means it is unlikely the player will participate; and Out means the player will not play.” A club that is certain a player will play may omit that player from the Game Status Report even if the player appeared on a practice report. Keep the two reports separate when interpreting the news.
Why “probable” is not a current shortcut
Probable is a retired designation, not a current category in the cited NFL policy. In 2016, the NFL Competition Committee said approximately 95 percent of players listed as Probable in prior years did play, and explained that the designation was removed because it added little useful distinction. That historical figure applies only to the former label; it is not a play probability for a player listed Questionable now.

When to check reports and inactives
Report deadlines depend on the day of the matchup. In the NFL’s 2026–27 important-dates schedule, Sunday-game practice reports are due Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday; the Game Status Report is due Friday, generally by 4:00 p.m. New York time or as soon as possible after practice. If a player’s condition changes after the first Game Status Report, the NFL says it must be updated. Thursday, Saturday, Monday, and special midweek games use different schedules, so check the entry for the specific game in the NFL injury-reporting schedule.
Teams designate inactive players about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff, according to NFL Fantasy’s Auto-Swap Inactives guidance. The official inactive list is the final pregame confirmation to check, but that timing can be too late for a fantasy lineup deadline or for a replacement whose game starts earlier. Do not assume every Questionable player will have a definitive resolution before your roster locks.

For current entries, consult the changing NFL injury page; a live listing is useful for the current week, not a lasting record of a player’s status.
How to decide whether to start a questionable player
- Follow the practice trend. Compare the scheduled reports rather than treating one participation label as a guarantee. A change from Did Not Participate to Limited or Full means the reported workload changed; it is not a medical forecast or a final game decision.
- Take the Game Status label literally. Out means the player will not participate under NFL policy. Doubtful means participation is unlikely. Questionable leaves uncertainty. The policy supplies no exact current probability for a Questionable player.
- Check the inactive list near kickoff. Use the official game-day list when available, while remembering that its publication may come after your lineup deadline.
- Check your platform’s rules and lock time. ESPN Fantasy says it uses the NFL official injury/inactive list to update player status and documents platform-specific rules for moving Out or IR players into an IR slot. These rules can vary by service and league settings; consult the help page and settings for your league at ESPN Fantasy Football IR Rules.
- Keep a usable backup available. Compare the starter’s kickoff with the substitute’s game time. If the substitute plays earlier, you may have to choose before the starter’s status is resolved; a later-starting replacement may preserve more time to wait. Also weigh role and matchup using separate football analysis, since injury designations alone do not establish fantasy opportunity.
When automated inactive swaps help
NFL Fantasy documents an Auto-Swap Inactives setting that can replace a player projected to score zero points with a bench option selected according to the user’s configured order. It can help with confirmed inactives, but it only applies to players projected for zero; it does not resolve every uncertain injury designation or remove the need to understand lineup locks. Set the backup priority deliberately and verify how the feature behaves in your league.

What an injury designation cannot tell you
An availability report is not a fantasy projection. A player can be active without the report establishing a healthy workload, snap share, or points outcome. The cited NFL policy does not give a current player-specific probability of playing for Questionable players, and it provides no validated conversion from practice participation to fantasy points.
Concussion status is especially unsuitable for calendar-based guesses. The NFL’s return-to-participation guidance says: “Each player and each concussion is unique. Therefore, there is no set timeframe for return to participation or for the progression through the steps of the graduated exertion program set forth below. Recovery time will vary from player to player.” The protocol places the return decision within the club physician’s professional judgment and requires independent confirmation for full return. That is medical-clearance guidance, not a forecast of fantasy availability or production.
