To confirm whether a UTEP player is available for a particular game, check the official availability report issued under the conference governing that matchup, then review UTEP’s official football news and game notes for context. Read the report’s own definitions and check it again near kickoff: an older injury mention is not a current game status.
Where to check UTEP football availability
Official conference report
Start with the conference’s official football availability report for the specific game. It is the source to use for a formal game-week participation category. Confirm that the report applies to the matchup you are checking and note its date; a designation refers to that upcoming game, not a player’s longer-term recovery.
UTEP news and game notes
UTEP’s official football news and game notes can provide team context or an explicit announcement. For example, UTEP’s September 3, 2026 opener article says linebacker Garrett Hawkins missed the remainder of the 2025 season after an injury and that Kam Thomas started the first game of 2025 before missing the rest of that season after an injury. Those are accounts of past events; they do not confirm either player’s status for a later game.
Roster
The official UTEP football roster helps confirm a player’s name and team staff roles, including sports medicine and football athletic training staff. It does not provide a game-week availability designation.

Check which conference policy applies
Do not assume the same reporting system or definitions apply to every UTEP game. UTEP’s official 2026 season preview identifies 2026 as the program’s first season in the Mountain West. The Conference USA policy linked below is relevant when that conference governs the game; the sources cited here do not establish the Mountain West’s current reporting process or category definitions. For a 2026 matchup, look for the applicable Mountain West report and policy rather than applying Conference USA rules by default.

The omission rule has a scope: Conference USA says reports generally list student-athletes expected to contribute. Redshirts, walk-ons, and players unlikely to participate are exempt unless their status changes significantly. Therefore, an omission under this policy is not the same as a detailed medical update or a guarantee about a player’s performance.

A reliable game-week check
- Identify the matchup. Confirm the opponent and game date, then determine which conference’s rules govern that game.
- Open the official conference report. Use the formal availability report for that matchup, and record the report date and listed category.
- Read that conference’s definitions. Interpret labels only according to the policy attached to the report. For Conference USA, use the meanings in the table above.
- Check UTEP’s official football coverage. Review news and game notes for context or an explicit announcement, while distinguishing historical injury coverage from current availability.
- Recheck near kickoff. Because the report addresses an upcoming game, look again close to game time for a newer report or announcement.
How to weigh conflicting or incomplete information
- Prefer the applicable dated conference report for its formal category. A roster entry establishes identity, not game status.
- Use UTEP news to add context, not to substitute an old injury note for a current designation. A prior-season absence alone cannot establish whether someone will play now.
- Match every update to a specific game and date. A status for one upcoming game should not be carried forward as a long-term prognosis.
- Do not infer a Mountain West label from Conference USA’s policy. Confirm the governing conference’s current rules and report for the matchup.
