How to Read an NFL Game-Day Injury Report and Inactive List

NFL practice designations are not game-status labels. Learn how to read both report sections and verify a player’s status on the official inactive list.

Read an NFL injury report in two stages: use the practice section to see what work a player completed, then read the separate game-status field for the team’s availability estimate. Neither is the final word on whether the player will appear. For that, check the official inactive list for the specific game close to kickoff.

Practice participation and game status mean different things

An NFL injury report can show practice participation and a game-status designation as separate pieces of information. Practice participation records the player’s work; game status estimates whether the player will participate in the upcoming game. Do not treat one field as a substitute for the other.

Practice participation records practice work

  • Did Not Participate (DNP): The player did not take part in practice. DNP alone does not mean the player is out of the game; check the listed reason and game status.
  • Limited Participation: The player took part in less than 100% of their normal repetitions.
  • Full Participation: The player took part in 100% of their normal repetitions.

These are practice categories, not game-availability labels. A player can have a practice designation without a game-status designation. NFL policy says that when a club is certain a player will play, it does not list that player in the game-status section. A player resting without an injury should be identified as not injury related, rather than presented as injured. NFL injury report policy

Game status estimates availability

Designation What it means
Questionable It is uncertain whether the player will play.
Doubtful It is unlikely the player will participate.
Out The player will not play.

These are the NFL’s stated meanings for the game-status labels. NFL injury report policy The league removed Probable because it had tended to provide little useful indication of uncertainty; in its 2016 announcement, the NFL said approximately 95 percent of players listed Probable in prior years played. That is a historical figure, not a current prediction. NFL.com’s 2016 announcement

Questionable describes uncertainty about participation, not a promise about playing time or effectiveness. It does not say how many snaps a player will get or how well they will perform.

How to check who is actually playing

  1. Confirm the report: Check that it is for the right week, team, and matchup, and use the newest posted version.
  2. Read the reason and practice fields together: Note whether the report identifies an injury or a non-injury reason, then read the participation entry. DNP by itself is not a game-status decision.
  3. Read the game-status field separately: Questionable means uncertain, Doubtful means unlikely to participate, and Out means the player will not play.
  4. Check the official inactive report close to kickoff: Use the latest inactive list for the matchup rather than trying to infer the final decision from a midweek practice entry. NFL.com publishes week-specific reports on its inactive reports page.

The injury report describes the player’s reported condition and expected availability; the inactive report identifies who is inactive for that game. If a player’s status matters to a lineup decision, the inactive list is the final game-day check.

When NFL injury reports are filed and updated

Filing days vary with the game day. The NFL’s 2026–27 important-dates page says reports are due by 4 p.m. New York time, or as soon as possible after practice concludes. It also requires a report update if a player’s condition changes after the initial game-status report. Check the report’s week and update time, especially when comparing an early-week entry with a later one. NFL 2026–27 important dates

How to compare players or conflicting updates

Compare the same information for each player: the newest report timestamp, practice-participation trend across the week, listed injury or non-injury reason, game-status label, and final inactive designation. If two updates conflict, prefer the newest official team or league update and note its timestamp. Do not use a status label to draw a medical conclusion beyond what the report states.

What the inactive list does—and does not—show

The inactive list is specific to a game; it is not the club’s full 53-player roster. As regular-season background, NFL roster guidance describes a game-day active limit of 48 players when a club has at least eight offensive linemen, or 47 when it has fewer than eight. Standard practice-squad elevations can change the number available in the game-day pool. Those roster rules explain why the inactive list is a game-day selection, not a complete roster list.
