Full Participation means a player took 100% of their normal repetitions; Limited Participation means less than 100%; and Did Not Participate means zero. These labels describe practice work—not whether the player will play in the game.
How the three practice participation levels compare
| Practice report label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Did Not Participate | Zero percent of the player’s normal repetitions. |
| Limited Participation | Less than 100 percent of the player’s normal repetitions. |
| Full Participation | 100 percent of the player’s normal repetitions. |
These definitions come from the NFL’s 2017 Injury Report Policy. “Normal repetitions” is the player’s usual practice work, not a universal number of reps shared by every player.
What counts as normal repetitions?
The NFL policy says normal repetitions include both individual drills and the team portion of practice. A player who takes part in individual drills but sits out the team portion is reported as Limited Participation, not Full Participation.
The policy also addresses scout-team work: if a medical condition limits a player who would normally take starter repetitions, extensive scout-team work does not change the limited designation.

Practice participation does not determine game status
Practice participation and game status are separate fields on an injury report. A full practice does not guarantee that a player will be available for the game, and a limited or missed practice does not by itself mean the player will be inactive. The NFL explained that it removed “Out” from the Practice Report to avoid confusion with the separate Game Status Report in its announcement of injury-report policy revisions. A 2026 NFL weekly injury report illustrates the distinct report fields.
The participation label also does not give a medical diagnosis or measure injury severity. “Limited” means less than the player’s normal repetitions; the policy does not set a common rep count or injury scale.

Walkthroughs and days off on reporting days
If a club holds a walkthrough instead of a regular practice, or gives players a day off on a normal reporting day, it still reports an estimated participation category based on the work the player would be expected to do in a regular practice. The report should identify that category as an estimate.

How to read a player’s weekly entries
- Compare the player’s participation label across the week to see how their practice work changes.
- Read the injury description alongside the participation category; the category alone does not explain the player’s condition.
- Check the separate Game Status field for the club’s designation rather than inferring availability from practice participation.
