What Does “Questionable” Mean on a College Football Injury Report?

On SEC and Big 12 reports, “questionable” means uncertain to play and is defined as a 50% chance—not a guarantee, diagnosis or historical hit rate.

“Questionable” means a player’s participation is uncertain—not that he is definitely playing or sitting out. In the SEC and Big 12, the pregame designation is defined as a 50% chance to play. That is a policy label, not a guarantee or a statistic showing how often players with that label actually appear.

What “questionable” tells you—and what it doesn’t

The label describes availability, not a medical diagnosis. It does not identify an injury, say how serious a condition is, or confirm that the player will take the field. SEC and Big 12 policies define the pregame category as uncertain to play, with a 50% chance to play. The SEC uses the wording “uncertain to play/50% chance to play” in its 2025–26 regulations; the Big 12 gives the same 50% definition in its 2025 policy.

That percentage is the conferences’ definition of the category. It is not a promise about an individual player, nor a measured historical rate. The policies cited here do not establish what share of players listed as questionable ultimately play.

It may not be about an injury

An availability report can reflect reasons other than injury or illness. SEC and Big 12 policies also account for circumstances such as suspension, ineligibility, legal issues or personal matters. The ACC says uncertainty can arise for any reason and that “only the status and not the specific reason will be publicly reported” in its availability-report policy. Don’t infer a diagnosis or the reason for a player’s status from “questionable” alone.

How it differs from doubtful and game-day statuses

On SEC and Big 12 pregame reports, “doubtful” is a separate, less favorable category than “questionable”: the policies define doubtful as a 25% chance to play and questionable as 50%. Those percentages should not be assumed to apply to every conference or competition.

The label can also change as kickoff approaches. SEC and Big 12 policies use game-day categories such as Available, Game Time Decision and Out, rather than simply carrying forward the midweek designation. The SEC requires its game-day report no later than 90 minutes before the scheduled start; the Big 12 calls for daily reports beginning three days before a game. A later report is more useful for a final status than an earlier questionable listing.

Which report and timing should you check?

There is no single NCAA-wide college football definition that governs every report. Policies vary by conference and competition, including which games they cover and when they are published.

  • SEC: Its 2025–26 regulations provide pregame probability categories and distinct game-day labels. The game-day report is due no later than 90 minutes before kickoff.
  • Big 12: Its 2025 policy calls for daily reports beginning three days before games, with different categories during the week and on game day.
  • ACC: Its reporting applies to conference games; its pregame and game-day categories differ.
  • Big Ten: The conference announced a 2026 process with four reports a week for games against conference opponents. Midweek reports include “Questionable”; game-day categories include Game Time Decision, Out and Out (1st Half).
  • College Football Playoff: Its process for participating schools’ playoff games began in 2025–26, with reports starting three days before a game, daily updates and a final report 90 minutes before kickoff. Pregame and game-day status lists differ.

The NCAA announcement available for March 2026 describes a reporting pilot for the Division I men’s and women’s basketball championships, not a universal college football policy. It says the system would not be implemented for other NCAA championships in 2025–26 while being evaluated.

A quick way to interpret a listing

  1. Identify who issued the report: a conference or the CFP may have a policy specific to its games.
  2. Check when it was published. A midweek or pregame “Questionable” listing may be superseded by a game-day update.
  3. Read the designation as an availability status, not a diagnosis. Unless the report says more, the reason may not be public.
  4. Use the latest report for the game in question. If it gives a game-day label such as Game Time Decision, use that rather than treating the earlier listing as final.
