The outcome depends on the replacement’s experience and skills, the team’s system, the opponent, game circumstances, and other lineup changes.
What changes when the backup takes over?
A quarterback change does not automatically mean a team installs a new offense. Coaches can keep the same system while adjusting the calls or emphasizing plays that better fit the replacement. A backup who runs well, for example, may make designed runs or movement plays more appealing. If the backup is less experienced as a passer, coaches might prefer shorter throws or a lower-risk approach. These are possible responses, not guaranteed adjustments; the choice depends on the players and situation.
Execution and familiarity
The replacement must understand the calls, communicate with teammates, and execute under game conditions. Practice repetitions and familiarity with the offense can matter, but their impact cannot be reduced to a guaranteed statistical benefit. At a Tennessee media luncheon on November 8, 2010, head coach Derek Dooley described giving another quarterback repetitions and developing him in case the starter was unavailable or did not perform well. That is one coach’s explanation of preparation, not a controlled study of results. Read the Tennessee transcript.
Skill fit and play selection
Differences in passing, running, decision-making, and comfort with the available personnel can influence which calls a staff favors. To tell whether that happened in a particular game, look at the team’s actual play mix and decisions rather than assuming the backup must have changed the scheme.

Why there is no single estimate of the offensive effect
The available evidence does not establish a robust average for how much a college offense’s performance changes when its starting quarterback is absent. A team’s output after a substitution also reflects opponent quality, score and field position, protection, receivers, the running game, and other injuries. A before-and-after decline may coincide with the quarterback change without proving that the change alone caused it.
General football injury statistics cannot fill that gap: the NCAA injury-surveillance study covers injuries across the sport, not offensive performance by quarterback status. The study’s scope is described here.

How to compare the starter and replacement
Use a meaningful sample of plays or drives where possible, and compare games with attention to opponent, score, field position, and other personnel differences. No single measure explains the whole offense; pair efficiency measures with drive outcomes and the play mix.
| What to examine | What it can show |
|---|---|
| Offensive EPA per play | Average expected points added per play; CollegeFootballData.com describes higher values as better on its season metrics page. It is season-sensitive and does not, by itself, isolate the effect of a quarterback’s absence. |
| Success rate and third-down performance | Whether the offense sustains plays and converts important downs. |
| Points per drive and turnovers | How often possessions produce points and whether the offense gives the ball away. |
| Explosive plays and yards per play | Whether the offense generates significant gains and how much ground it covers per snap. |
| Pass/rush share and designed quarterback runs | Whether the offense’s play mix changes with the replacement. |
For a practical comparison, note each quarterback’s time in the offense and experience, then check the play mix and efficiency alongside drive results. Account for sample size and game context before attributing a difference to the quarterback. CollegeFootballData.com’s season team metrics page defines EPA per play.

What to keep in mind about preparation and rules
Dooley said, “It’s rare for a starting quarterback to go through the season without getting dinged up, hurt, doesn’t perform well, something.” He made the remark as Tennessee’s head coach at the November 8, 2010 media luncheon; it is his view about the need to prepare a backup, not an established injury rate or a universal finding.
Rules and available communication systems can vary by season and division. For season-specific questions about playing rules or coach-to-player helmet communication, consult the NCAA football playing-rules resources.
