What NVIDIA DLSS Does—and How AI Upscaling Changes a Game’s Image

DLSS is a family of RTX graphics features: some reconstruct resolution, others generate frames or target ray tracing and anti-aliasing. Support varies by feature and GPU generation.

NVIDIA DLSS is a suite of AI-assisted graphics features for GeForce RTX cards—not one universal upscaling switch. Its Super Resolution feature renders a game at a lower resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution output; other DLSS features generate additional displayed frames, reconstruct ray-traced pixels, or apply anti-aliasing at native resolution. Which features you can use depends on your RTX generation and whether the game supports them.

What DLSS does

NVIDIA describes DLSS as a suite of neural-rendering technologies. For Super Resolution, NVIDIA says it “samples multiple lower-resolution images and uses motion data and feedback from prior frames to construct high-quality images.” In practical terms, the game renders fewer pixels than the final output would contain, and the reconstruction uses information across frames to build the displayed image. This is more than enlarging a finished low-resolution picture, but the reconstructed result is not guaranteed to match native rendering in every scene.

The suite’s features tackle different graphics tasks:

  • Super Resolution (SR): reconstructs a higher-resolution output from lower-resolution frames and motion information. This is the feature most people mean by AI upscaling.
  • Frame Generation (FG): generates additional frames between game-rendered frames, increasing the displayed frame rate. NVIDIA says it works with Reflex to help maintain responsiveness; displayed frame rate and input responsiveness are related but not the same thing.
  • Multi Frame Generation (MFG): on supported RTX 50 Series hardware, can generate up to five additional frames per rendered frame—a maximum 6X multiplier described by NVIDIA. That is a feature capability, not a guarantee that a particular game and system will reach that output.
  • Ray Reconstruction (RR): reconstructs pixels in ray-traced scenes and is intended to replace traditional hand-tuned denoisers. It addresses ray-traced image quality, not general resolution scaling.
  • Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing (DLAA): applies DLSS Super Resolution technology at native resolution for anti-aliasing. It prioritizes image quality rather than rendering below output resolution to gain performance.

These feature descriptions and NVIDIA’s hardware matrix are on its DLSS product page; NVIDIA’s DLSS developer documentation also describes the suite.

How DLSS can change a game’s image

Super Resolution: detail, edges, and motion

Because Super Resolution reconstructs the output from lower-resolution input, it can affect apparent edge definition, fine detail, clarity during motion, and stability from frame to frame. The outcome depends on the game, selected mode, GPU, output resolution, model, and scene. There is no universal image-quality ranking established here across DLSS versions or settings.

NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 announcement presents its own examples of earlier-model ghosting on fast-moving objects, jagged edges, and shimmer, alongside vendor-selected comparisons it says show fewer such artifacts with DLSS 4.5. Those are NVIDIA’s examples and claims, not independent testing or a guarantee that every game or scene will improve in the same way. See NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 announcement.

Frame Generation: smoother display, not faster simulation

Frame Generation chiefly changes how many frames are displayed and their cadence. Generated frames are not the same as frames rendered by the game, and a higher displayed frame rate does not mean the game’s simulation or input sampling rate increased by the same multiplier. It can make motion look smoother, while responsiveness remains a separate consideration. NVIDIA pairs Frame Generation with Reflex, but the available evidence does not establish independent latency measurements for a particular game or system.

DLAA and Ray Reconstruction serve different image goals

DLAA keeps rendering at native resolution and uses the DLSS technology for anti-aliasing, so its purpose differs from Super Resolution’s lower-resolution input. Ray Reconstruction is relevant when a game uses ray tracing; it targets reconstruction and denoising of ray-traced pixels rather than scaling the whole image.

Which GeForce RTX cards support each DLSS feature?

NVIDIA’s current feature matrix lists the following GPU generations. A compatible card alone is not enough: the game must integrate the feature, and driver or app support may matter for particular options. Check the game’s graphics settings and NVIDIA’s current DLSS information before relying on a specific feature.

DLSS feature GeForce RTX generations NVIDIA lists
Super Resolution RTX 20, 30, 40, and 50 Series
Ray Reconstruction RTX 20, 30, 40, and 50 Series
DLAA RTX 20, 30, 40, and 50 Series
Frame Generation RTX 40 and 50 Series
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation RTX 50 Series
3D-Guided Neural Rendering RTX 50 Series

The matrix is feature-specific: for example, an RTX 30 Series card is listed for Super Resolution but not Frame Generation, while Multi Frame Generation is listed for RTX 50 Series. NVIDIA’s counts also vary by date: on January 14, 2026, it said DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution was available in over 400 games and apps, and DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation in over 250. These are NVIDIA’s dated availability figures, not independent audits or live totals. Details are in its January 14, 2026 announcement.

How to choose a DLSS setting

Start with the problem you want to solve rather than assuming one option is best for every game. Compare image detail and stability, rendered versus generated frame rate, responsiveness, output resolution, and your GPU generation.

  • Want more performance at a chosen output resolution? Try the game’s Super Resolution options. They trade the resolution of the rendered input against reconstructed output; inspect fine detail and motion in the game you are playing.
  • Want anti-aliasing at native resolution? DLAA is the relevant option when the game offers it. It is not the same performance strategy as rendering below output resolution.
  • Want smoother displayed motion? Consider Frame Generation if your GPU and game support it. Treat its displayed frame rate separately from responsiveness and the game’s underlying rendered frames.
  • Using ray tracing? Ray Reconstruction may be available as a ray-traced image-quality option, but it does not replace the resolution-scaling choice.

NVIDIA’s January 2026 guidance says its NVIDIA app can override DLSS model presets in supported games. In that DLSS 4.5 guidance, NVIDIA notes that RTX 20 and 30 Series GPUs lack native FP8 support, so Models M and L can have a heavier performance impact on those GPUs; NVIDIA suggests Model K may offer a preferable performance/image-quality balance for those users. This is NVIDIA’s model-specific guidance, not a universal setting recommendation. See the January 2026 announcement.

Should you buy an RTX card for DLSS?

A GeForce RTX card is the relevant physical product because NVIDIA identifies RTX GPUs as the hardware for DLSS. But buying one only makes sense after checking the exact feature you want, the game that uses it, and the GPU generation required. A card that supports Super Resolution may not support Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation. If you already have suitable hardware for the feature and game you care about, DLSS alone does not establish a need to upgrade. A high-refresh-rate display can make smoother displayed motion more noticeable, but it is not a requirement for DLSS.
