There is no single best weapon for every Avowed character. The strongest choice for you depends on whether you want to fight up close, pressure enemies at range, support spellcasting, or play more defensively. Obsidian describes combat as a mix of “swords, spells, guns, and shields,” with bows and grimoires also part of the game’s arsenal (official game page).
How to choose the right weapon in Avowed
Choose for the combat loop you want, rather than chasing a universal tier list. Consider these factors together:
- Role and range: Decide whether you want close-range damage, ranged pressure, spell support, or added defense.
- Build synergy: A weapon should complement the abilities you use and the way you approach encounters.
- Damage or status focus: Frost, shock, fire, and other effects can matter when the specific weapon reference confirms them.
- Defensive utility: A shield can support safer play. That is a playstyle benefit, not proof that shields are objectively stronger.
- Availability and investment: Consider where an item can be found, whether it is unique, and how much upgrading it needs.
Unique weapons are worth considering for their extra perks, but rankings from gaming sites are editorial recommendations, not official developer tiers. No named statistical study or independent comparative weapon metric establishes a numeric damage winner.
Weapon picks by playstyle
For adaptable close-range combat: swords
Choose a sword if you want a straightforward melee option that fits a close-range approach. Its value depends on how it works with your abilities and the rest of your setup; the available evidence does not establish one sword as the best for every build.

For ranged pressure: guns or bows
Guns and bows give you ranged options. Choose between them based on the specific weapon, its effects, and how it supports your combat loop. There is no verified, across-the-board damage comparison here that makes one the universal ranged winner.
For spell-focused play: grimoires and spells
Grimoires and spells suit a magic-centered approach. Consider how they support the abilities you intend to use rather than treating the grimoire as a standalone answer to every encounter.

For a defensive approach: shields
A shield can help make a more cautious style viable. Game8’s ranking highlights shield utility, but that is an editorial assessment—not official evidence of superior balance or damage.
For bludgeoning damage and stun finishers: quarterstaff
The quarterstaff is a current addition to the arsenal. In its February 17, 2026 anniversary-update announcement, Obsidian described it as a bludgeoning weapon with “wand style stun finishers,” designed with the archmage fantasy in mind (Obsidian’s anniversary update announcement). Consider it if you want a weapon that bridges a magical theme and close-range combat.

Unique weapons, locations, and upgrades
Unique weapons can add perks that make them attractive for a particular build. Before committing, check a current item-location guide and confirm its directions and item details against the game version you are playing. Availability and upgrade level affect how useful a weapon is in practice.
New Game Plus changes the upgrade calculation: Obsidian says unique weapons and armor carry over, but reset to level 1. Enemies become stronger, and the attribute cap rises from 15 to 30. A carried-over unique can remain part of your build plan, but you will need to invest in upgrading it again (Obsidian’s New Game Plus details).

What the latest patch means for weapon advice
Obsidian’s latest patch announcement reviewed here is Patch 2.1, dated March 25, 2026. It describes an option to disable respawning encounters and lists bug fixes; it does not announce weapon balance changes. Treat specific weapon rankings, stats, and location advice as version-sensitive, and do not infer a weapon rebalance from this patch (Patch 2.1 announcement).
