A specific day is the date Steam displays; a month, quarter, or year is only a broader window; and “Coming Soon” means Steam is showing no date. Steamworks documentation says developers set an exact intended date separately from the level of detail shown to players, so the public label may not reveal the planned day.
Where to find a game’s release date on Steam
- Open the game’s official Steam store page.
- Find the release-date field and read its wording as displayed. Steam localizes date formats, so the order or presentation may vary by language and region.
- Report only the precision Steam shows. If you want Steam to notify you when an upcoming game releases, add it to your wishlist; Steam says wishlisted players can be notified upon release.
The store page is the relevant public-facing source for what Steam is currently telling customers. If a third-party listing differs, describe the discrepancy and date when you checked the Steam page rather than assuming that every database is updated on the same schedule.

What each Steam release-date label means
| Steam display | What it tells you | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|
| Exact day | Steam is displaying a particular release date to players. | It is still a displayed plan, not a guarantee that plans cannot change. |
| Month and year | The public date is limited to that month. | Do not present the month’s last day as the launch date. |
| Quarter | The public date is limited to a quarter. | Do not turn the quarter’s final day into a specific launch date. |
| Year | The public date is limited to a year. | Do not claim a month or day that Steam does not show. |
| “Coming Soon” | Steam is displaying no date. | The label does not establish a specific day or how close release is. |
Valve’s Steamworks Release Dates documentation explains that developers set an exact intended release date, which is not directly visible to players, and choose how much date detail customers see. The documented options are an exact date, month and year, quarter, year, or no displayed date (“Coming Soon”).
Why an upcoming list may seem to show a different date
Steam uses the end of a broad period for sorting games in upcoming-release lists: a month-and-year date is sorted as the month’s last day, and a quarter is sorted as the quarter’s last day. That is a list-ordering convention, not added precision in the public release window. For example, a game shown as “August 2026” might be sorted as though its date were August 31, but that does not mean Steam has announced August 31 as its release date. See Valve’s Steamworks Release Dates documentation for the sorting behavior.

Can a Steam release date change?
Yes. Steamworks says developers can change a specified date up to two weeks before it. Once the date is within that two-week window, the game begins appearing more prominently in upcoming-release lists and the date can no longer be changed through the normal process. This cutoff describes Steamworks’ documented workflow, not a promise that every date shown to players will remain unchanged. Details are in Valve’s Release Dates and Release Options documentation.
Steamworks also requires a new product’s Coming Soon page to be live for at least two weeks before release, according to Valve’s Release Options documentation. That requirement does not turn “Coming Soon” into a countdown or reveal the planned launch day.

How to describe a placeholder or broad date accurately
- If the page says “Coming Soon,” say that Steam is not displaying a date; do not guess the launch day.
- If the page shows a month, quarter, or year, describe that window as shown rather than converting it into its final calendar day.
- If explaining why the public display lacks a day, distinguish the developer’s exact intended date from the less specific date display Steamworks lets customers see.
- If reporting a particular game’s date, check its Steam page close to publication and include the date you checked, because release plans and displayed dates can change.
