Xbox’s next console is called Project Helix. Microsoft says it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games, and that alpha versions of its hardware are planned to ship to developers beginning in 2027. That is a development milestone, not a confirmed consumer launch date: Xbox has not announced a retail release date, price, or final specifications.

What Xbox announced about Project Helix

On March 11, 2026, Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald identified the next-generation first-party console as Project Helix. He described its central platform aim this way: “Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.”

That establishes the direction Xbox is pursuing, but not the full compatibility picture. The announcement does not identify supported PC storefronts, list compatible games, or explain how console and PC titles will be accessed on the device.

AMD and the performance claims

Xbox says Project Helix uses a custom AMD system-on-a-chip and is co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. The announcement also claims an “order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability.” These are company descriptions of the planned hardware; the cited sources provide no independent tests, benchmark results, or hands-on assessment.

When is the next Xbox coming out?

Xbox plans to begin shipping alpha versions of Project Helix hardware to developers in 2027. Ronald’s wording was: “I’m excited to share we plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.” Alpha hardware is for development, not a promise that consumers can buy the console in 2027. Xbox’s announcement gives no retail date or price.

The February 24, 2026 T3 report used the phrase “Our next console is well underway.” That framing is consistent with a project in active development, but it does not add a confirmed consumer schedule. Treat predictions about a 2026 or 2027 retail launch as speculation unless Xbox announces one.

What Xbox’s wider 2026 plans say about the strategy

Project Helix is part of a broader message about Xbox across devices and generations. In its announcement, Xbox said games from four Xbox generations would remain playable for years to come. It did not provide a title-by-title compatibility list or explain every technical detail of how that continuity will work.

Xbox also said Xbox mode for Windows would begin rolling out in select markets from April 2026. The announcement described a rollout plan, not worldwide availability on that date.

The same announcement reported more than 1,500 Xbox Play Anywhere games and said 500 development teams had shipped games with Xbox Play Anywhere. Those numbers describe the existing program and participating teams, not Project Helix’s launch library or a confirmed count of games that will run on the new console.

What Asha Sharma’s console commitment means

On February 20, 2026, when Microsoft named Asha Sharma CEO of Microsoft Gaming, she wrote: “We will celebrate our roots with a renewed commitment to Xbox starting with console which has shaped who we are.” She also described continuing across PC, mobile, and cloud. This is a statement of strategic commitment, not a product schedule or a promise about Project Helix’s price, features, or release window. The quote reflects her title and context at the time it was published.

In the same leadership announcement, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Xbox had more than 500 million monthly active users. That is a user-activity figure from February 2026, not a console sales total.
