For a focused, high-pressure run-and-hide session, choose Outlast; for slower, stealth-led tension, choose Alien: Isolation. If you want a more measured survival-horror campaign, Resident Evil 2 is a candidate—but the available evidence does not establish a dependable first-run length for it. Treat any runtime as an estimate: player pace, difficulty, exploration, and extra content can all change how long a game takes.
How to choose a horror game for a one-session marathon
“One session” is personal: it might mean a single evening or simply a game you can stay immersed in without committing to a long series. The useful distinction is not a universal ranking, but the kind of tension you want and how confidently its length is documented.

- Compact and intense: pick a concentrated experience with a clear pressure loop, such as evading a threat while managing limited visibility.
- Stealth-focused: choose a slower game where observation, hiding, and careful movement drive the tension.
- Measured survival horror: choose a campaign built around survival-horror systems, while accepting that the evidence here does not confirm an exact first-run runtime.
Completion times vary with player experience, difficulty, exploration, and whether the estimate includes additional content. The figures below are not a controlled comparison, and none is a promise that you will finish in a particular number of hours.
Compact and intense: Outlast
Outlast is a single-player, first-person survival-horror game. Its camera and night-vision premise make it a strong fit if you want to feel vulnerable and keep moving rather than approach horror as a shooter. The official Steam listing describes the game and confirms single-player support.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
How long might it take?
GamesRadar+ gives an editorial estimate of about five hours (GamesRadar+, 2026). That is a rough guide, not a publisher-stated runtime or a guaranteed completion time. Third-party achievement-time listings also produce different estimates depending on the platform and completion approach; TrueTrophies’ survival-horror completion-time list should be read as user-data-based estimates, not a standardized first-playthrough comparison.
Stealth-led and deliberate: Alien: Isolation
Alien: Isolation suits players who want sustained stealth and survival tension rather than a compact sprint through scares. In a 2014 interview, developer Gary Napper described the game as a departure from shooter and action approaches: “Not being a shooter – or even an action game – Isolation is a pretty drastic departure from previous Alien titles.” He also discussed its pacing as a “linear story way.” Read in context, those comments point to a deliberately paced, linear story experience—not a claim about a fixed runtime. The interview is available from Eurogamer.

- Take The Shape of Evil: Target, stalk, and terrorize the residents of Haddonfield as the iconic Michael Myers.
- Become a Hero of Haddonfield: Arm yourself with weapons and everyday household items to fend off the impending evil, alert the authorities, and rescue the innocent families of Haddonfield.
- Experience the Ultimate Horror Sandbox: An expansive array of dynamic map features, distinct gameplay systems, life-like NPC interactions, and player abilities elevates the horror sandbox like never before.
- Singleplayer Slashing: Immerse yourself in the haunting narrative events of "The Night He Came Home" through the eyes of Michael Myers in a standalone singleplayer story.
- Elevated Asymmetrical Multiplayer: Cooperate with up to four players as the Heroes of Haddonfield and face off against the one and only Michael Myers in unpredictable multiplayer matches unfolding within a living, breathing game world.
Choose it when you want time to observe, hide, and build tension. The interview supports that pacing distinction, but it does not establish a dependable completion-time figure for a one-session run.
A more measured campaign: Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 2 is worth considering if you want survival horror as a broader campaign rather than the especially focused run-and-hide premise of Outlast. Capcom provides an official play-time statistics page, but the available information does not establish an authoritative expected first-run completion time. The existence of play-time tracking is not enough to infer how long a typical first playthrough will take, so plan by available time rather than a claimed hour count.

Which one fits your night?
| Game | Best fit | Pacing and threat response | What the evidence says about time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outlast | A concentrated, high-pressure run-and-hide experience | First-person survival horror built around the camera-and-night-vision premise | About five hours is GamesRadar+’s editorial estimate; not a guaranteed runtime |
| Alien: Isolation | Slower, stealth-focused tension | Developers described a linear story approach; stealth and survival rather than shooter or action emphasis | No dependable completion-time figure established here |
| Resident Evil 2 | A more measured survival-horror campaign | Survival-horror systems; the exact threat response varies by game | Capcom offers play-time tracking, but no authoritative expected first-run length is established here |
