How to Compare the Total Cost of Owning a Gaming Console

A fair console cost comparison uses the same ownership period and household game basket, then adds only the subscriptions, accessories, energy, and repair costs that apply.

To compare console ownership costs fairly, use the same time period and household use for each option. Add the actual local price of the console, the games you expect to buy, any subscription you need, extra accessories or storage, electricity, and a repair or replacement allowance. Keep possible resale value separate as an estimate. The result is personal: format preferences, game choices, existing gear, play hours, power rates, and local prices can all change which console costs less.

Start with a like-for-like comparison

Choose a period—such as three or five years—and apply it to every console. State whether you assume one console for the whole period or include an upgrade or replacement. Neither period is a universal console lifespan; it is simply the window for your estimate.

Use prices and costs for the same market, currency, date, and intended household use. Distinguish a suggested retail price from a retailer’s current price, bundle, refurbished console, or temporary promotion. For games, compare the same titles and realistic purchase timing rather than one system’s launch prices against another’s sale prices.

Build the ownership-cost worksheet

Use this formula for the chosen period:

Total cost = console purchase + games + subscriptions + needed accessories and storage + electricity + repair or replacement reserve − estimated resale proceeds.

Enter actual local prices wherever possible. When a cost is uncertain, use a range and show the assumption rather than implying a precise result.

Console and configuration

Record the exact model and storage configuration, and the price the buyer would actually pay at checkout. Keep taxes or bundle treatment consistent across the consoles you compare. Do not treat a dated MSRP as a current retailer quote.

Games

Make a basket of games the household genuinely expects to play. List titles, format, expected purchase timing, and prices from the same market and date. Physical and digital editions may offer different buying options, so use the format the household would actually choose.

Subscriptions

Count only a plan the household needs for its intended play. Note the tier, individual or family membership, renewal period, and features or game access that matter to the buyer. Do not charge every console owner for a premium tier or assume a family plan is useful to a single player.

Nintendo’s US annual membership prices displayed on October 4, 2026 were $19.99 for an individual standard plan and $49.99 for an individual Expansion Pack plan; family memberships were $34.99 and $79.99, respectively. Nintendo says pricing depends on country and membership duration. Check current local terms, family sharing, and renewal settings before using these figures. Nintendo also specifies that online play applies to compatible games. See Nintendo Switch Online details and membership terms.

Accessories and storage

Only add items that are not included with the console and are not already owned. For example, Microsoft says Xbox Series X includes one controller and supports most Xbox One controllers and gaming accessories. That may reduce an additional purchase for a household that already owns compatible equipment.

Storage expansion is conditional, not a universal ownership expense. Microsoft lists the Seagate 1 TB Storage Expansion Card as an option for Series X|S that adds storage at the console’s custom-SSD performance. Include it only if the buyer’s library and available internal storage make it worthwhile.

Electricity

Estimate electricity with watts × hours used ÷ 1,000 × local price per kilowatt-hour. State the assumed play hours and tariff. A manufacturer’s average is an input to this calculation, not a prediction of a particular household’s bill.

Microsoft reports global average gaming power of 122 W for Xbox Series X and 61 W for Series S, and app averages of 51 W and 31 W, respectively. The company says these figures are based on console telemetry and are periodically updated. Sony’s cited European and UK samples show PS5 gaming power varying from below 100 W to around 200 W; Sony notes that use varies by console, region, game, and session. These figures have different scopes and methods, so they do not establish a strict head-to-head energy ranking. Microsoft’s Xbox energy-saving information and Sony’s PS5 power-saving information describe platform power use and settings.

Warranty, repairs, and replacement

Check the warranty for the exact model and the buyer’s jurisdiction. Sony says it provides warranty and out-of-warranty console repair service, but the cited information does not establish a repair price or a warranty duration that can be compared across every market. Do not turn repair availability into a made-up repair allowance. If the amount is unknown, mark it as an uncertain reserve or leave it out while saying so. Check Sony repair support.

Resale

If resale is part of the estimate, show the assumed proceeds as a separate, adjustable line. The result depends on future condition, demand, and local secondhand prices; do not quietly subtract a speculative amount from the purchase cost.

What dated price examples can—and cannot—tell you

Manufacturer prices are useful reference points, but dates, markets, and availability matter. The following examples are not a complete current price survey and should not be generalized beyond their stated market and date.

Model differences that can change the calculation

Disc versus digital availability affects the formats a buyer can use, but it does not by itself establish which person’s game library will cost less. Microsoft describes Series X as offering native 4K output and a UHD Blu-ray disc player. Series S is disc-free, designed for 1440p gaming with upscaling to 4K, and available in 512 GB or 1 TB SSD configurations. A buyer choosing disc-free hardware should consider storage needs and the digital prices of the games they intend to buy; a disc drive matters only if physical media is useful to them. Microsoft’s Xbox console comparison.

Existing compatible accessories can also change the total. Microsoft says Series X includes one controller and Series X|S supports most Xbox One controllers and gaming accessories, so a buyer with compatible gear may not need to budget for replacements. Check compatibility and what is included with the specific bundle before counting an accessory as a new cost.

Turn the worksheet into a useful decision

  1. Pick the horizon and household. Choose the same number of years and the same players and use pattern for each option.
  2. Price the exact hardware locally. Record the configuration and current purchase price, identifying any bundle, refurbished status, or promotion.
  3. Cost the same game basket. Use the titles, formats, and likely purchase timing the household expects.
  4. Add only needed ongoing costs. Select the subscription tier, accessories, and storage the household would actually use.
  5. Estimate energy transparently. Apply the formula using stated hours and the household’s electricity tariff; treat platform-reported power figures as estimates with their stated context.
  6. Handle uncertain future costs explicitly. Use a range for repairs or replacement if you have a defensible basis, and display resale as a separate assumption.
  7. Compare totals and assumptions together. If a small change in game prices, hours, or repair costs flips the outcome, report a range rather than naming a definitive cheapest console.

Why there is no universal cheapest console

The console sticker price is only one line in the ownership total. Game selection and purchase timing, subscription needs, existing accessories, storage choices, power use, local electricity rates, and repair coverage all vary between households. There is no established like-for-like total-cost study here covering current models, a defined game basket, services, energy, and repair assumptions. A useful answer is therefore a transparent estimate for a named market, date, configuration, and use case—not a platform-wide claim.
