The project commonly described as DOOM Eternal on Game Boy Color puts a Raspberry Pi inside a Game Boy shell and streams the game from a gaming PC. Its creator reported sluggish controls, so it is a demonstration rather than a polished handheld port.
How the Game Boy-shell project works
Electromaker’s project, “Doom Eternal On Gameboy color,” was created by 314Reactor. The creator explains that the device is a Raspberry Pi build made earlier, with Moonlight streaming from a gaming PC to the Pi inside the shell—not a Game Boy Color running DOOM Eternal itself. The project instructions describe a gaming PC with an Nvidia graphics card and GeForce Experience, Raspberry Pi software and display setup, Moonlight, and framebuffer copying. They include a 320×240, 30 fps stream command. Those are the author’s historical setup instructions, not a current compatibility guarantee or an independently measured performance result.
Controls and playability
The documented GPIO mapping uses the d-pad for mouse movement, A and B for mouse clicks, Start for forward, and Select for jump. The creator says this control scheme is limited and used a keyboard and mouse for menus. The project’s conclusion is blunt: “It does not work well.” The creator describes the GPIO input as slow and sluggish, and suggests that connecting a keyboard and mouse to the Pi could improve the experience.

How it compares with Doom homebrew for handhelds
There are separate projects that can be confused with the streaming demonstration. Neither is DOOM Eternal:
| Project | What runs | Hardware or requirement | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electromaker Game Boy-shell build | DOOM Eternal streamed from a gaming PC | Raspberry Pi in a Game Boy shell, plus a gaming PC and streaming setup | Not native Game Boy Color software; its creator reports sluggish GPIO controls. (Electromaker) |
| DOOM for GB | A limited DOOM-inspired reimagining; the listed demo lets players shoot zombies while exploring part of E1M1 | Game Boy or Game Boy Color-compatible hardware or emulator | A separate homebrew demo, not DOOM Eternal. GameBrew lists version a04 and an update date of 2021-08-01. (GameBrew) |
| GBADoom | A prBoom-based Doom port | Game Boy Advance or emulator; a flash cart is needed to run it on real hardware | A different Doom project for a different handheld generation, not a GBC release or DOOM Eternal. GameBrew lists version 2.7 and an update date of 2025-08-15. (GameBrew) |
What you need to know before trying to build it
The Electromaker page includes a Raspberry Pi Zero case in its parts list, but that alone does not establish the exact Pi board model used in the build. Check the project’s build details before choosing a board or buying parts. Its streaming command and setup steps are examples from the creator, not assurance that the same configuration will work with a current PC, software, or network.

A Game Boy Color flash cart is relevant only if you want to run compatible homebrew software. It cannot turn the Raspberry Pi streaming build into a native DOOM Eternal cartridge, nor can it make the PC game run directly on GBC hardware.

DOOM Eternal is not the same release as the original DOOM. Bethesda’s 2020 Chromebook announcement described official re-releases of DOOM (1993) and DOOM II, while mentioning DOOM Eternal separately in connection with rewards. That announcement does not establish a Game Boy Color edition. (Bethesda announcement)
