Xbox Cloud Gaming runs eligible games on Xbox server hardware in a Microsoft Azure datacenter and streams the session to your device. You do not install the streamed game or need an Xbox console; you do need a supported device, a supported region, access to a cloud-playable game, and a reliable internet connection.

What is Xbox Cloud Gaming?

With Xbox Cloud Gaming, the game runs remotely on Xbox server hardware in an Azure datacenter. Your device receives the streamed game and sends your controls back to the server. Microsoft describes this as Xbox Game Streaming in its Game Development Kit documentation.

This is different from Xbox Remote Play. With Remote Play, your own Xbox console runs the game and streams it to another device. Cloud Gaming instead uses Xbox server hardware, so you do not need to own a console to play.

Streaming avoids downloading and running the game locally, but it depends on a suitable connection and an eligible cloud catalog. Xbox notes that streaming may have limitations compared with local play, including resolution, audio output, cloud-save storage, companion-app support, or peripheral support.

What do you need to play?

  • Game access: Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate, or a free Microsoft account for select free-to-play games. Some games you own or buy are also eligible to stream. Availability depends on the title, plan, region, platform, and current catalog.
  • A supported device and region: Xbox Cloud Gaming is not limited to Xbox consoles. Check Xbox’s Cloud Gaming page for current regional availability, device compatibility, and games.
  • A compatible input method: Most games need a gamepad, but select titles support touch controls and many support mouse and keyboard on compatible devices.
  • A stable internet connection: Xbox lists a 10 Mbps download-speed minimum, recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality.

Game Pass hours are changing in November 2026

As of October 4, 2026, Xbox’s announced monthly included cloud-playtime limits have not yet taken effect. Xbox says that beginning in November 2026, Essential will include 5 hours per month, Premium 10 hours, and Ultimate 15 hours. Xbox also announced that additional hours could be purchased, but its September 3, 2026 announcement did not specify the price or all market and eligibility details. It also announced an option, starting in November, for people without Game Pass to buy cloud hours and stream eligible games they own; availability and terms should be checked with Xbox as they are published.

Which devices can you use?

Xbox lists Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, selected LG, Samsung, and VIDAA OS smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and selected Meta Quest headsets. Exact supported models and operating-system versions vary, so check Xbox’s current compatibility information before choosing a device specifically for cloud play.

Depending on the device, you may use the Xbox app or a browser. Xbox names Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Safari among supported browser options; browser play starts at xbox.com/play. Android, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and ChromeOS devices may use a browser, while various consoles, Windows PCs, TVs, streaming devices, handhelds, and Meta Quest devices have app access. Availability is device-specific and can change.

How to start a cloud game

  1. Check the title and access route. Use Xbox’s Cloud Gaming page to confirm that the game is currently cloud-playable in your region and available to you through your plan, free-to-play access, or ownership.
  2. Open the service on a supported device. Use the Xbox app where available, or open a supported browser and go to xbox.com/play.
  3. Sign in with your Microsoft account. Use the account associated with your subscription or eligible owned game. A free account is sufficient for select free-to-play games.
  4. Connect an input device if the game needs one. Pair a compatible controller over Bluetooth or connect it by USB. If the title supports touch or mouse and keyboard, you can use those supported controls instead.
  5. Select a cloud-enabled game and launch it. The game runs remotely; your device streams the session rather than installing the full title.

Which controller or controls do you need?

A separate controller purchase is not automatically necessary. First check whether the controller you already own works with your device and the game. Xbox says compatible controllers can connect by Bluetooth or USB; the particular controller and connection method depend on the client device.

Some cloud games offer Xbox touch controls, and Xbox’s getting-started guide says many games support mouse and keyboard on compatible devices. Check the game’s control options before playing. A phone-mounted controller can be useful for handheld play, but controller price does not establish better streaming latency or image quality.

What internet connection works best?

Xbox lists 10 Mbps download speed as a minimum, recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Its current guidance gives best-performance rates of 10 Mbps on mobile devices and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs, and tablets. These are guidelines, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or response time.

Xbox Wire’s December 19, 2025 getting-started guide recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable connection and wired Ethernet when possible; it also identifies 5 GHz Wi-Fi or 5G as wireless options. A fast connection alone does not guarantee smooth play: Xbox says results also depend on location, device, and other factors.

Can you stream games you own?

Yes, selected games that you own or buy can be streamed through Xbox’s “Stream Your Own Game” feature, subject to cloud-play eligibility. It does not make every purchased Xbox title streamable. Check the current cloud catalog for a specific game; Xbox’s 2024 feature announcement explains the feature but its launch list is historical, not a current catalog.

Cloud Gaming vs. Remote Play

Feature Xbox Cloud Gaming Xbox Remote Play
Where the game runs Xbox server hardware in an Azure datacenter Your own Xbox console
What you need A supported client device, network connection, and access to an eligible cloud game Your home Xbox running the game and a connection to that console
What determines performance Connection to the datacenter, location, device, and network conditions Connection back to your home console and the network path

Microsoft’s documentation distinguishes the two endpoints, but does not establish which mode will perform better in a particular home. The network path and setup determine the result.
